Introduction:
Introduction:
-Known/Revealed will of God-This is the will of God that he was made very plain in the word of God. example:
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
-Hidden will of God-This is the will of God that is known only by God, and is revealed on a case by case basis. example:
-Hidden will of God-This is the will of God that is known only by God, and is revealed on a case by case basis. example:
36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.
-It is important that we make this distinction, because when most people ask this question they are interested in his “Secret/Hidden” will.
17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Tell me about the verbiage in this verse? What we notice is that it is God’s expectation that we find the will of God. and that he does not expect us to walk around for the duration of our life searching for something that he has made plain
16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
Tell me from this verse why knowing the will of God is imperative? two reasons: time is short and the days are evil. This tells us the knowing the will of God is not just for benefit but ultimately for others.
Ephesians 5:15-
15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
What does Paul say about how we should live in this present world? We should not walk around not exercising wisdom, but the we should be wise
-(v.17) Tells us not to be “Foolish” lacking knowledge (intentionally), but (seek) understanding what the will of the Lord is. This is in the imperative, which means this a command by Paul. Not subject to our interpretation.
-(v.17) What the “will of God” is. Paul commands us to know the will of God.
If Paul commands us to know the will of God, what does this imply about God? This implies that God has made his will plain.
-(v.18) Starts with another command “do not be drunk with wine” for that is dissipation. “but be filled with the Spirit” He is using the picture of a drunkard to teach about “Spirit filling”
-Spirit filling can be an obscure teaching, so Paul gave us a physical example of what it looks like:
Tell me how the drunkenness motif relates to Spirit filling? Alcohol captures the person personality and faculties making the person become something that is not themselves.....Spirit filling is when the HS has taken over your faculties(Mind, Body & Spirit)
Tell me what that look like when the Spirit just takes over your mouth, mind, and body?
Tell me the difference between the indwelling of the HS and the filling of the HS?
Common Misconceptions about the HS:
-We have to pray for his presence: If you are a christian he goes wherever you go
-
-We need more of his love: His love for you does not grow, because it is always at a maximum. We grow to Love God more, but God does not grow to love us more
5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
-We need more grace-Grace is power & Sufficiency to live this life
9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
We need him to give more strength-He has given you all the strength you will ever need
3 Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
We need you to guide us-he has given us his word
psalm 119
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
-There is a reason most of us pray this way, and that is because it seems as if the HS comes in doses and we get stronger and stronger. In the process. That’s what it feels like but that is not actually what’s happening.
-What’s happening is that the HS is getting more of you and his power is not being hinder by our disobedience.
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
-(v.8) “but you will recieve power(dunamis) when the HS has come upon you”
-This power is for a specific purpose. It is not absolute power, it is directed power. Power enough to complete a task. Notice the task “and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth”
What did God give the witnesses? He gave them explosive power that was sufficient enough for them to finish the task

The spirit-filled life yields every decision to the control of the Spirit
How can one live this principle out in his life??
Matthew
22 Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28 Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!”
When Peter keep his eyes on God what was he able to do??
When Peter took his eye off God what happened to him???
How do we apply this teaching?
How does the Spirit filled life express itself in life?
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and shall be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:19-
Ephesians 5:19-
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 5 Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; 6 not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. 7 With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men, 8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether slave or free. 9 And masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening, knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.
