The Cleansing
The Cleansing
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
John 2:13-
This is Gods word lets pray.
Intro Story
Intro Statement
Jesus Cleanses the temple two times. Once at the beginning of his ministry which John records then again he cleanses the temple towards
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Lets talk about this Holiday.
Begun with the Israelites in Egypt.
Blood of an innocent lamb.
The Passover lesson
In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.
:`4
Why is this a big deal?
The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.
Temple Money
Only approved animals
Jacking up the prices.
Taking advantage of their position for financial gain.
Taking advantage, abusing the poor.
And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.”
John 2:
Cords most likely to drive the cattle and sheep out, not for the humans.
he flips some tables
Actually I have a connection who was able to get me some pictures.
You guys wanna see them?
His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
This was a fulfillment of prophecy
John
Jesus, cares about the temple, he cares about the Church.
How things are done, are important. That is why there are so many books in the bible that address church structure and practice.
So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?”
The Jewish leaders do not like what he is doing.
John 2:18
What gives you the right?
Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Weird answer
The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”
John 2:19
Wasn't even all the way done.
How you gonna do that?
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
But he was speaking about the temple of his body.
Oh
Jesus says that the sign is his resurrection.
When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.
This all made sense to the disciples after the resurrection.
A lot of the stuff Jesus said and did seemed weird to the disciples when they witnessed it but made sense later.
John 2:22
Hindsight.
Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.
John 2:23-25
Many believed, but Jesus did not fully entrust himself to them.
Because he knew their hearts and knew the extant of the human sin condition.
It is most likely here that Jesus says they did not actually believe. This was a false form of faith.
I do think that there are those today who claim to believe but do not really.
When the trials and temptations of this world come about, they dont last. the false faith withers. As we see with the parable of the sower.
“I the Lord search the heart
and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”
I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,
John 10:
Fighting Injustice one step at a time
Heart
Clean our your heart.
Let it begin within you.
Repent from the sin in your life. Turn to Jesus and ask him to cleanse you for the first time if you are not saved. And if you are and maybe you just need a clean up. Let him come drive the sin out of your heart like the cattle. And flip over your pride and selfishness.
Stop pointing the finger at injustice and address the injustice where you can as an individual first.
Stop with the constant face book posts of what others should do and do something today!
Clean up the Church
2. Church
Churches need to be a place that addresses evil and fights against it. We should not allow it with in.
There should be no abuse allowed with in the church at all. Zero Tolerance. Forgiveness and discipleship yes but we must always take the side of the victim not the abuser.
Clean up Society
3. Society
If we as indaviduals and together as a church allow Jesus to clean us up and then work through us we can make a positive impact on society, begining at the local level.
My hope for America is not in any president, not this one, the last one, or the next one. It is not in the senators and representatives, my hope for our nation and world is the church.
If we do our part we can make a difference.
Closing Statement.
We have never known more about humans than today, through phycology and genitics we have learned alot yet we still can solve the human condition. As much as we know, we still can not remove sin.
We desperatly need Jesus to cleanse us of sin and injustice in our hearts, churches and society.
