Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Temptation is only a temptation if it’s a temptation.
We cannot be lured by things that we are not tempted by. Satan does not use the same bait for everyone.
What tempts us ? “Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed.”

My example
The concept is vital to understanding the temptations of Jesus. (For Jesus to be tempted he had to have been enticed) It was the only way he could truly sympathize with us.
Must remember Jesus was tempted as a man/responded as a man See (Hungry—Strong Desire)
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Jesus succeeded where Adam and Israel failed.
Look at (Look at Verse 5:3) Adam and Eve had also failed miserably in areas, where we will see Jesus succeed. Later in the study
1 “The whole commandment that I command you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that the Lord swore to give to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that, as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.

Deuteronomy 2. God’s Education of Israel in the Wilderness (3–5)
a. So He humbled you: All of God’s education begins here. Some never even make it past this first essential step. If we are not humble and not teachable, there is then no point to the rest of any of God’s education.
b. Allowed you to hunger, and fed you manna: The next grade of God’s education is total dependence on the LORD. Israel had to rely on God beyond their own knowledge (which you did not know), and beyond their own ability.
c. That He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone: In the negative, this was the lesson God wanted them to learn. In the positive, they had to learn that man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD. Sadly, many still live by bread alone, living only for material things, for what can be bought or sold or earned or possessed materially
And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
There is no indication that Jesus was led to fast previous to going into the wilderness or whether he knew how long he would be there.

So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
The understanding here is that our relationship with the Father is critical. Our intimacy with God, heightens your spiritual senses and provides us the wisdom and discernment to make decisions. 23 The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way;

To you and I going into the wilderness after such a phenomenal event would not make any sense. Most people would recommend that Jesus take advantage of the momentum and go right into ministry
There are good ideas and God ideas. God’s idea doesn’t always make sense. It’s why it so crucial that we learn to walk in the spirit and not in the flesh

3. Jesus sensed that there was going to be some resistance—(Fasting) The holy spirit will often quicken us to prep us for battle
AFTER 40 DAYS (6 WEEKS)
It isn’t a coincidence the enemy tempts him after 40 days
Why did the enemy wait 40 days before tempting Jesus?
The enemy is sneaky and patient, will hold off until you are the most vulnerable.
Jesus was in a devout frame of mind
Publicly obeying Him (The heavens were watching him)
Humble frame of mind (Hungry/Tired)
He was completely separated from the world (Lonely)
HALT
Hungry - Hunger will draw out our survival instincts: he can easily be derailed by hunger, become irritable (you won’t starve)
Angry - Cause you to say and do things you wouldn’t normally do. (Spirit of offense, cause division, wolf )
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
Lonely- We are programed for intimacy. (Legitimate needs) forces to fill these holes of loneliness with other people.

Tired - Fatigue is a sin instigator (Adultery, pornography, alcoholism)
2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Matthew 4:2-
Jesus is being prepared to launch God’s most important plan for man . His work was to determine the eternal fate of all mankind, there could be no mistakes.
Jesus preparation.
1. He had to be prepared to carry out God’s plan, no matter what the conditions were. (Succeed where Adam and Israel failed. (The plan of God was for him to suffer, sacrifice and ultimately lead him to a cross) He could not choose the easy way of self, power, and glory)
The first temptation deals with self-sufficiency. Jesus had the power, if he so desire to turn the bread in to stones. However to do so, would be disconnect from God plan and order his own life.
Jesus certainly had the power to turn the bread into stones, why didn’t he?
This would be a misuse of power /Operated independently
He would be trusting in himself
He would be setting the example for others to use their ability to center it upon ourselves and build themselves
It was’t God’s plan. Timing is everything.( Jesus didn’t refuse the angels—) When we force a pregnant women to deliver a baby to early they will be still born? ISHMAEL and ISAAC —EXAMPLE FAMILY MEMBER YOUR PRAYING FOR — Right thing + Wrong time = disaster and disobedience right thing +right time= blessing/obedience
JESUS WAS BUSY, HOWEVER DID HE EVER SEEMED FLUSTERED WHEN PEOPLE CAME TO HIM AND REQUESTED HIS TIME? NO WHY HE WAS ALLOWING GOF TO MANAGE IT
We can observe that temptation begin with a rationalization. Satan says common your God’s child he wants you to be happy, not hungry. (Happy verses holy) Take care of it yourself.
What satan says here makes sense? He was hungry, why not feed himself.
How does Jesus respond to his first temptation?
With the word of God. What satan says here makes sense? He was hungry, why not feed himself. It did make sense, but God word made more sense.
Why did he respond with the word of God, why not just rebuke Satan into another galaxy?
Matthew 2. The First Temptation: An Appeal to the Lust of the Flesh (3–4)
Jesus was willing to fight this battle as a man; He could have easily rebuked Satan into another galaxy, but resisted him in a way that we can imitate and identify with.
i. Jesus used Scripture to battle Satan’s temptation, not some elaborate spiritual power inaccessible to us. Jesus fought this battle as fully man, and He drew on no “special resources” unavailable to us. “Out flashed the sword of the Spirit: our Lord will fight with no other weapon. He could have spoken new revelations, but chose to say, ‘It is written.’ ” (Spurgeon)
ii. He could have stood against Satan with a display of His own glory; He could have stood against Satan with logic and reason. Instead, Jesus used the word of God as a weapon against Satan and temptation.
• He used a weapon that one can use when they are all alone.
• He used a weapon to defend His Sonship.
• He used a weapon to defeat temptation.
• He used a weapon that was effective because He understood it.
ii. We effectively resist temptation in the same way Jesus did: by countering Satan’s seductive lies by shining the light of God’s truth upon them. If we are ignorant of God’s truth, we are poorly armed in the fight against temptation
Jesus was willing to fight this battle as a man; He could have easily grabbed satan by the throat and thrown him into another world, but resisted in a way we can imitate and identify with.

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Satan brings the temptation in the highest point of the holiest place. See
The place of worship. How effective it is for Satan to bring temptation at highest peaks of our intimacy with God.
12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
Satan is not merciful. He doesn’t care if your going to church (ARGUMENTS, your doing ministry. In fact when you are at the peak of doing the greatest things for the Lord is when he is likely to strike— TIRED, QUIT, DISBELIEF
Sometimes it is the highest places that we are must vulnerable, because of pride. Stay humble—Stay hungry

What does Jesus mean when he says do not put the Lord your God to the Test?
Do not place God to the test —
God does not want us to place ourselves in harms way

Matthew 4:
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Satan showed Jesus the world in a moments time, he also said that if Jesus were to worship him he would give it to him, could Satan deliver on his promise?
4 For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me.
For Jesus to be tempted the devil had to deliver on this promise. Jesus never tells him you can’t.
4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

The phrase “god of this world” (or “god of this age”)
1. indicates that Satan is the major influence on the ideals, opinions, goals, hopes and views of the majority of people.
2. His influence also encompasses the world’s philosophies, education, and commerce. The thoughts, ideas, speculations and false religions of the world are under his control and have sprung from his lies and deceptions.

He has an effect on significant parts of this world. Like Pharoah, however God has only allowed this to play out his plan

If the devil can give the world to Jesus why doesn’t jesus take him up on the offer?

Why didn’t Jesus take Satan on his deal? What would that mean for us?
Jesus could have ruled (righteous world), but you and I would not have eternal life.

No one would be okay with, we have had a taste of what it is like to be like him
I we require justice so does he. You and I have lied, murdered, deceived. I can’t bare to see you pay that price. So I will come and die for you as a man/God.—Serve that sentence.
Pay the price, Had Jesus taken Satans deal there will be no salvation
Minimize the pleasure and maximize the consequences.
