15Do not love the world or anything in it.
If you love the world, love for the Father is not in you.
16Here is what people who belong to this world do.
They try to satisfy what their sinful natures want to do.
They long for what their sinful eyes look at.
They brag about what they have and what they do.
All of this comes from the world.
It doesn’t come from the Father.
17The world and its evil longings are passing away.
But those who do what God wants them to do live forever.
INTRODUCTION
A hypocrite is hated by everyone
A hypocrite is someone who says/does one thing and says/does another.
Now we are all guilty of hypocrisy at some point.
Jesus speaks against hypocrisy 20 times in scripture!
Someone once said, “I would rather be known in life as an honest sinner, than a lying hypocrite.”
What makes someone a hypocrite is someone who lives that way as if its okay, or maybe don’t recognize it.
Here is a short test if you are hypocrite: if you don’t practice this maybe you shouldn’t call yourself a follow of Jesus:
Mat 28:19-20
Repentance isnt saying sorry, that is confession, reptance is changing.
Are you changing?
These are just a few of His commands.
Do you practice them?
If not, maybe dont be a hypocritew and say your a follower of Jesus.
Just say your a follow of your desires.
Someone once said, “I would rather be known in life as an honest sinner, than a lying hypocrite.”
Our text today addresses hypocrites.
Maybe it is you, if you don’t think so then it definitely speaks of you.
If you are thinking I do practice but I fail sometimes then this verse is a warning for you:
If
15 vDo not love the world or the things in the world.
wIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, xthe lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
17 And ythe world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
2:15 Do not love the world or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him, 2:16 because all that is in the world (the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance produced by material possessions)37 is not from the Father, but is from the world.
2:17 And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains38 forever

17The world and its evil longings are passing away.
But those who do what God wants them to do live forever.
15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.
16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions.
These are not from the Father, but are from this world.
17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave.
But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

Someone who says one thing and does another.
Now we are all guilty of hypocrisy at some point.
17 And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever.
What makes someone a hypocrite is someone who lives that way.

Our text today addresses hypocrisy:
THE PROBLEM (v.15)
When we read “the world” in this text this pretty much means everything but God.
Just like Israel in the OT repeatedly had to decide allegiance to God or allegiance to the pagan nations around them.
Christians must also choose allegiance to God than to this world.
The problem is that God’s love is not in anyone that loves the world and the things in the world.
Have you heard of a love compatibility test?
15 vDo not love the world or the things in the world.
wIf anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him
This verse is a love compatibility test.
Do you want to see if your relationship with God will work?
Well if you love the world and the things in this world you wont have a relationship with God.
but what if it is not bad?
As Philo (a Jewish philosopher from 20-50 AD) said, “It is impossible for love to the world to coexist with love to God, as it is impossible for light and darkness to coexist.”
As Augustine (Roman Christian philosopher in 354 - 430AD) said so well, “man has a God-shaped hole” in his life.
We try to fill that hole with earthly things, but we can only find peace and fulfilment in Him! My own desires is the curse of Eden!
As Augustine said so well, “man has a God-shaped hole” in his life.
We try to fill that hole with earthly things, but we can only find peace and fulfilment in Him! Independence is the curse of Eden!
Philo: “It is impossible for love to the world to coexist with love to God, as it is impossible for light and darkness to coexist.”
Now if you understand and obey what God’s says here see what John says later:
*NOTE: the word know is “genosko”
Let me clarify if you give more attention to anything that belongs to this earth, God’s love is not in you.
