Distracted Disciples
The disciples became distracted from Christ’s purpose through argumentation with the Pharisees.
Have you ever noticed that the things we most often argue about now are not important later?
The chaotic scene is similar to Moses coming down from Sinai.
A Desperate Father
His son was being tormented by demons and the disciples did not have the “strength” to cast it out.
Jesus rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, but he also pointed out the father’s need for faith.
Refocus on the Deliverer
Refocus on the Deliverer
The father’s response to Jesus shows his wavering hope, “if you can do anything, have compassion and help us.”
Christ is the source of all compassion. He is the Deliverer of our souls.
Christ’s response shows the man’s need for faith.
“if you can?” All things are possible for the one who believes.”
Jesus is merciful.
Jesus is willing.
Example: King Asa when faced with a problem that was great,
11 And Asa cried to the Lord his God, “O Lord, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O Lord, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.”

Recognize Your Dependence through Prayer
Why did the disciples fail? They trusted in their own ability. They began to rely upon past spiritual power to meet today’s need. (see Mark 6:13)
Don’t rely on past spiritual power to meet today’s need.
Don’t presume you have the strength in the present and don’t need to seek the Lord.
Asa sought man’s help later in life and ended poorly.
(ESV)
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
