The Garden Project
Why did God create us? To experience His glory, His love and goodness.
Genesis 1:
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
You see He created man, and then told them to take creation somewhere, to be fruitful, to multiply, to fill the earth and subdue it, bring it under their authority and control.
Genesis 2:
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
So that’s the plan, to fill the earth with image bearers who are living under God’s good authority and thriving in a world created specifically for them and their success, but with a purpose. To know God and help all that follow them to know Him.

Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.
He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
What we have here is an exercise in autonomy, what does autonomy mean? Freedom from external control or influence; independence.
From here, it all goes south. Man is no longer living under God’s authority completely because of their desire for autonomy and now a sin nature has been added to the mix.
In Cain the older brother kills Abel his younger brother, now we have murder, not the increasing of life, being fruitful and multiplying, but death, the taking of life. Later in this chapter we have a man named Lamech who is bragging about killing. Sad
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.

The wickedness is great and every intention was evil.
Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as people migrated from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.”

Total and complete disobedience for the original mandate from God to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth for the glory of God.
But God won’t leave it this way.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
Through Abram, soon to be Abraham, God will partner with man again to fill the earth with His image and glory, that’s the plan.
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob who becomes Israel and fathers 12 son’s who become the 12 tribes of Israel and grow into a nation while in captivity in Egypt.
God will then partner with Moses to free them and have His nation of people of representatives.
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
But Israel continuously fails.

The Old Testament is filled with prophecies, over 300, of one who is to come and right the wrongs and fix the problem. His name is Jesus. Paul and the writer of Hebrews had this to say about Him.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’

“ ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Matthew 4:1-10
Verse 10, You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve, this is about allegiance, obedience, submission to authority, a forsaking of autonomy.
So why send Jesus? Jesus comes to be the perfect man who lives obediently under God’s authority, according to God’s perfect plan. All that Adam and every man after him failed in, Jesus will be successful, the perfect man. But not only to live for us, He came to die for us, in our place. Our death was deserved, we are sinful and disobedient to God’s authority, we’ve exercised autonomy, but not Jesus. As the perfect man, and also God, He is the only human who didn’t deserve death, and also the loving God who willingly and capable to bear our sins and take our death.
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus came preaching the kingdom of God, this idea of as followers of His, we are returning to living under God’s authority and rule, according to His good plan, no longer living in rebellion.

At the end of the book, and 22 we see a new heaven and a new earth and it’s filled with people from every nation, language, all people represented, all living with God, in His presence, experiencing His glory and goodness, and living willingly under His authority.
