Focus on Purifying Your Life
Focus on Purifying Your Life
Purity is one of those subjects that seems to get plenty of attention already, but with the release of “50 Shades of Grey”, I started thinking about the need to mark it in my Bible. And here’s why–purity is not just a goal for the young and unmarried. It’s the standard for every Christian. No matter what age you are, I imagine you’ve been influenced by, subjected to, or even tempted by impurity in some way recently. That’s the nature of the world in which we live.
In the front of your Bible, write:
Purity-
– YOUR SIN WILL BE EXPOSED
But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and be sure your sin will find you out.
While Moses is addressing a specific sin in a specific situation, the warning still applies today. This is an especially good reminder for certain hidden sins. Underline “be sure your sin will find you out.” In the margin, write “(see also ).” At the end of the verse, write .
– PRAY FOR A PURE HEART
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
This is the psalm David wrote after being convicted of his guilt, part of which was sexual in nature. Underline “create in me a clean heart.” At the end of the verse, write 101:3.
– NEVER LOOK AT ANYTHING DIRTY
3 I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless. I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.
Underline “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes” and “it shall not fasten its grip on me.” At the end of the verse, write 119:9.
– HOW CAN A YOUNG PERSON STAY PURE? LIVE THE WORD
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write v 27-32.
27 Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works. 28 My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! 29 Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law! 30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. 31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; let me not be put to shame! 32 I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!
– DETERMINE TO BE HOLY
30 I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. 31 I cling to your testimonies, O Lord; let me not be put to shame! 32 I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!
Circle the words “I will,” “I have” (twice), “I cling,” and “I shall.” Choosing to keep our eyes on the holy Word of God will make it easier for us to look away from the unholy. At the end of the verse, write .
– ABOVE ALL ELSE, GUARD YOUR HEART
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.
Underline the entire verse. The “issues of life” are mentioned in the following verses. When we guard our heart, the rest of our body will follow. At the end of the verse, write 6:24,25.
,– DON’T ALLOW DESIRE TO GROW IN YOUR HEART
24 to preserve you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;
Underline “do not desire her beauty in your heart.” Desire for your spouse is good and right (see Song of Solomon), but we must never allow ourselves to desire anyone who is not our spouse. It begins in the heart. At the end of the verse, write v. 27-29.
– ADULTERY IS COSTLY
27 Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? 28 Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? 29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; none who touches her will go unpunished.
Circle the words “burned” and “scorched,” and underline all of verse 29. We can’t play with fire without getting burned. As the text says, adultery “will not go unpunished.” At the end of the verse, write 8:8.
– AVOID PERVERTED OR SUGGESTIVE SPEECH
8 All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write 10:9.
– DON’T DO THINGS YOU HAVE TO HIDE
9 Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write 28:10.
– NEVER LEAD ANOTHER TO SIN
10 Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way will fall into his own pit, but the blameless will have a goodly inheritance.
Underline “He who leads the upright astray in an evil way will himself fall into his own pit.” At the end of the verse, write .
– HEART, MIND, AND CONDUCT MATTER
10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write .
– IF IT CAUSES YOU TO STUMBLE, REMOVE IT FAR FROM YOU
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
The example is given of a man looking at a woman to lust after her. Jesus said it would be better to remove the eye than to lose his soul in hell. While He is not suggesting we literally cut off body parts, He is saying we should give up (sacrifice; go without) anything that we know leads us to temptation. Modern day examples might include personal internet use, books by certain authors, etc. At the end of the verse, write .
– KEEP YOUR FOCUS ON CHRIST INSTEAD OF YOUR BODY’S DESIRES
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write .
– STAY AWAY FROM ANYONE WHO IS SEX-MINDED
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write 6:9.
– KNOW WHAT GOD CALLS UNRIGHTEOUS
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
Underline “do not be deceived.” The world promotes homosexuality, fornication, and adultery, but God doesn’t want us to be confused. They are sinful acts. At the end of the verse, write v. 18-20.
– HONOR GOD WITH YOUR BODY
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Underline all of v. 18 and “glorify God with your body” in v. 20. At the end of the verse, write .
– FLESHLY SINS CRUSH THE SPIRIT
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Underline all of v. 16, 17. Circle “deeds of the flesh” in v. 19. Underline “those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God” in v. 21. At the end of the verse, write ,.
,– AVOID EVEN A HINT OF IMPURITY
3 But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.
4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Underline the entire verse. As Christians, we will honor and protect the Lord’s church by refusing to engage in anything improper. At the end of the verse, write .
– FILL YOUR MIND WITH PURE THINGS
8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Underline the entire verse. Thinking on things that are lovely, pure, and right will make it that much harder to allow unholy things into our mind. At the end of the verse, write .
– CONTROL YOUR BODY
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, 5 not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; 6 that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. 7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. 8 Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
Underline “abstain from sexual immorality” and “possess his own body in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion.” At the end of the verse, write ,.
,– SAY ‘NO’ TO UNGODLINESS
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people,
12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,
Underline all of v. 12. At the end of the verse, write .
– KEEP THE MARRIAGE BED PURE
4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Underline the entire verse. At the end of the verse, write .
– A SEXUAL PAST DOESN’T PREVENT A PURE FUTURE
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Underline the entire verse. It’s never too late to start embracing purity! -Kathy Pollard
