Introduction
Introduction
I am very grateful we live in a country with religious freedom
We don’t have to be concerned about meeting to worship for fear of government authorities breaking up our gathering or arresting us
We are free to gather and worship whenever and wherever we choose
Nevertheless, Christians are under relentless attack from an enemy
Our religious freedom in this country is eroding
Apart from that erosion, we have an enemy dedicated to destroying each one of us
While we need to be aware of Satan and his tactics, we do not need to fear him or be intimidated by him
Who is Satan?
Who is Satan?
Satan is a created being - an angel who rebelled against God - and has been condemned to eternal death
I WILL ascend into heaven
I WILL set my throne on high
I WILL sit on the mount of assembly
I WILL ascend above the heights of the clouds
I WILL make myself like the Most High
There is no path to redemption for Satan and the third of the angels that joined in the rebellion
Ever since Adam and Eve were created in the image of God… as free moral agents… given a choice whether we serve God, our Creator
Ever since Adam and Eve were created in the image of God… as free moral agents… given a choice whether we serve God, our Creator
Satan didn’t waste much time before tempting Eve… “Did God really say…?” and promising that she “could be like God”
He implied that God was withholding the best things from them
He lied to them… He deceived them… and as a result, the human race was hijacked by Satan
Several facts we should remember as we think about who Satan is
His is a created angel being - he is NOT almost equivalent or even comparable to God
His tactic
He has limitations… his abilities are limited to that of other angels (different from humans, but restricted by how he was created)
He is condemned… he is defeated… but he keeps fighting
The Power of Satan
The Power of Satan
Satan’s goal remains consistent… he intends to take as many people as possible with him into the hell fire prepared for him and his angels
His tactics are devious and relentless
He has deceived billions and continues to do so
Many so-called Christians have been blinded and deceived to the true intents of Satan and his force of evil angels
The power of Satan comes through his deception
His outright power is finite - God has limited the power of any angel, and whatever power Satan has was defined by God
He has no more power since he rebelled
He has become extremely skillful in using that power to get people to believe his lies
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Ever since he has deceived Eve, he has used many variations of that same lie to trap others
Satan is a professional liar
Ever since he has deceived Eve, he has used many variations of that same lie to trap others
in fact, he can only lie… there is NO TRUTH in him
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
his deceptive skills are his primary weapon against unsuspecting or unguarded people
What he says is often partially true or almost true and he convinces us to believe him
While many may picture Satan as this evil person or as a roaring lion, I believe he most often appears as an innocent (if not righteous) angel of light
12 And what I am doing I will continue to do, in order to undermine the claim of those who would like to claim that in their boasted mission they work on the same terms as we do. 13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.
An angel of light is very believable...
if an angel appeared to you, how would you know whether it was a true angel or Satan disguised as one?
We have to be very careful and discerning… familiar with the truth of Jesus
Satan is also described as a roaring lion...
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
It should be noted that the only time a lion roars is after a prey has been captured...
While hunting prey, a lion is incredibly silent and stealthy… he sneaks up on and pounces on prey that is not watchful, not paying attention, distracted, oblivious to the danger that lurks very near to him
However, when he has caught and killed his prey, he will roar mightily to intimidate his not-yet-captured prey
One of Satan’s tactics is to make us believe he is more God-like than he deserves
I don’t believe Satan can know what we are thinking
He wants us to believe he can, but that is simply another lie
The power of God
The power of God
On the other hand, God is all-powerful
He spoke into existence everything including the universe and all the angels
His power is infinitely superior to that of any created being - including Satan himself
God determines exactly how much power Satan has
At the same time, God permits Satan to operate in His own creation… allowing mankind the choice of worshiping their very Creator or rejecting Him and embracing the lies Satan concocts
Satan can only steal the souls of man… he cannot rival God
God’s plan of salvation and redemption made it possible for sinners who had rejected rebelled against God to have their sins forgiven and their relationship restored
Had Satan known what God was intending to do, he would not have worked to have Jesus put to death
Had Satan known that putting Jesus to death allows God to demonstrate his power (and victory) of the resurrection, he would have allowed Jesus to live
This shows some of the limitations of Satan’s knowledge and power!!
Satan is Defeated
Satan is Defeated
When Jesus allowed himself to be put to death, the purpose was to ultimately defeat the power of death and the grave
When Jesus rose from the dead… Satan KNEW he was defeated
He refused to admit it… continues to lie about it to this day
He is defeated and he knows it!
Satan’s only strategy is to convince mankind one of several things...
There is no God - no resurrection -
There is no hell - no eternal punishment
I am a basically good person
I can do enough good things to earn my salvation
God is keeping the best things from me
Sat
However, the war continues to rage
It is all about control of human souls
Whoever has control of our hearts and souls determines whose side we are on
there are only two sides… only two options
We are either on the side of King Jesus - or we are on the side of Satan
We choose…
when we permit sin in our lives, we are choosing Satan over Jesus
when we choose Jesus, we allow Him control of all areas of life
The Whole Armor of God
The Whole Armor of God
- ESV Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
Paul was in prison in Rome at the time of this writing… he likely was guarded by a Roman soldier.
As he observed these soldiers, he made the comparison to what it is like to be a soldier for Jesus Christ
9 For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ,
9 For this is why I wrote, that I might test you and know whether you are obedient in everything. 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
Belt of Truth
Belt of Truth
Belt of Truth
Belt of Truth
While the belt is not the most noticeable piece of the armor, it is the central piece that holds other pieces securely in place
The belt was wide and made of sturdy leather
A skirt of overlapping leather straps with small rectangular metal pieces attached protected the groin area of the soldier
The belt also had hooks and holders to secure the scabbard to keep the sword readily accessible, a quiver to hold lances, a dagger, and an apparatus to rest the large battle shield
There were clips on the belt that held the breastplate in place
Supplies of bread, oil, and water could also be carried on the belt
The belt of TRUTH is the best defense against Satan’s lies
The best way to detect counterfeit money is to be very familiar with the genuine
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
Jesus Christ is TRUTH and Satan is UNTRUTH
Our spiritual armor against Satan is held together and in place with the TRUTH of Jesus Christ
This keeps us from being deceived
It protects us against the most subtle and dangerous lies of Satan
Satan wants to plant seeds of doubt… and as sense of self-sufficiency (we have it figured out)
Both of these characteristics undermine our confidence and reliance on God
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
The belt of truth is a call to TRUTH, commitment and being a living sacrifice… wholly and completely surrendered to the truth of Jesus Christ… not my own interpretations
Breastplate of Righteousness
Breastplate of Righteousness
There were different types of breastplates used by Roman soldiers
Some were made of heavy strips of linen or leather that hung down very low
pieces of metal or thin slices from the hooves and horns of animal were hooked together and hung from the linen
A more familiar type was a molded metal chest plate that covered the vital areas of the torso from the base of neck to the thighs
those areas needed protection since much fighting was done with a short sword in hand-to-hand combat
the breastplate covered two vital areas… the heart and “the bowels”
in Hebrew culture the heart symbolically represented the mind or the thinking process
the bowels represented the emotions
The mind and emotions encompass everything that causes a person to act…
his knowledge, understanding, conscience, will, desires and drives
his knowledge, understanding, conscience, will, desires and drives
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
his knowledge, understanding, conscience, will, desires and drives
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

God clothes a person in His righteousness when he is born again…
However, it also involves a practical righteousness...
Living a holy life of obedience
The way we live our lives and conduct ourselves is a breastplate that protects our mind and emotions from attack
When we choose to take our own way (instead of complete obedience) we open ourselves to potential attack by Satan
We don’t earn our good-standing with God because of what we do.
At the same time, we are responsible to live in obedience and submission to Jesus Christ if we expect to survive Satan’s attacks
Shoes of Preparation of the Gospel of Peace
Shoes of Preparation of the Gospel of Peace
The shoes (or sandals) of the Roman soldier were not normal footwear
the footwear of choice was a thick-soled hobnailed semi-boot
it had thick leather straps that secured it to the foot
on the bottom of the sole were little pieces of metal the protruded like spikes to give the soldier firmness of footing - so he could stand firm in battle
It not only provided stability when fighting, but also provided sure footing when marching for long distances
Even the best soldier is ineffective, if he can’t stand up!
Standing in the confidence and the assurance of the gospel of peace
The assurance of the gospel… and the peace that it brings gives believers stability in the face of attacks from the enemy
Knowing assuredly the
Knowing what Jesus did for us… knowing the peace that came through salvation… knowing whose side we are on all point to our shoes
it is a resolve to claim (hang onto the peace) the God gives even when we don’t feel it or have doubts
It is also a desire and willingness to invite others to join the winning side
It is a complete confidence of who we are because of Jesus Christ and His redemptive work on the cross
PUT ON… TAKE UP...
PUT ON… TAKE UP...
There are six items of armor listed in this passage… we are told to PUT ON the first three (belt, breastplate, shoes)
These are the pieces of armor we are to wear at all times… they are the basics… the core… the most critical… in the battle
Without them, the other three pieces are of limited value
The last three pieces we are told to TAKE UP...
This indicates that these items are to be close-by and ready for us to grab at a moment’s notice
A sports analogy…
a baseball player does not take his bat to the outfield…
nor does he use his glove when he is up to bat
in a similar way, the shield, helmet, and sword are used as needed
Shield of Faith
Shield of Faith
Roman soldiers had two types of shields
A small (24-36 inch) round shield that was use for dress parades… it looked good!
A large (60x30 inches) rectangular shield that in Greek was named “a door” because it looked lik it
These were made of wood and leather with multiple layers of protection… yet light enough to carry into battle
these shields could be soaked in water before battle as an extra protection against the flaming arrows of the enemy
this would allow a group of soldiers to form a moving wall by interlocking shields and advancing toward the enemy … protecting those behind them and allowing them to shoot arrows and attack from behind the wall of shields
We are able to block Satan’s attacks … by faith
Faith is trusting completely and unconditionally God and His Word
True faith doesn’t need to ask any questions or seek any explanations… it is believing God for who He is
Faith is obedience…
obedience is virtually impossible without faith
Faith is non-existent without action (obedience)
The only way to quench the fiery darts hurled at us by Satan is to believe God!
He is our shield of protection
As long as we believe God, our shield is up
When we believe one of Satan’s lies, our shield comes down
Trust God in everything… even when it makes no sense
Helmet of Salvation
Helmet of Salvation
The helmet is one of the most distinctive pieces of armor
It was often ornate and intricately decorated and plumed with brightly dyed feathers or horse hair
The helmet was designed to deflect blows the the head and yet allow the soldier maximum visibility
There are three possibilities to what the helmet of salvation is referring to: the past, the present, or the future
The PAST is the point in time when we repented and put our trust in God… being freed from the penalities of sin
the PRESENT aspect of salvation is the victory and the freedom we have from the overwhelming power of sin (and Satan)
the FUTURE aspect is the promise and hope of the time when there will be no more sin
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
The helmet of salvation is not referring to the past...
The helmet of salvation is not referring to the past...
it is referring to the present and future aspects of salvation...
is is both the assurance of God’s continuing work in our lives AND the confidence of a full and final salvation from sin yet to come
claiming that promise and that assurance deflects some of Satan’s direct blows intended to kill us
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
Sword of the Spirit (Word of God)
The sword of a Roman soldier of that day was a feared weapon
It was short, light-weight, and well-balance
It was quick, sharp, and deadly
The two sharpened edges of the broad blade could easily slice a Sunday roast
It was designed to easily penetrate and disembowel the enemy
People of that day understood that if a Roman soldier unsheathed his sword, he would use it
God’s Word is our sword… it is our only offensive weapon with which to attack the enemy
God’s Word is infallible - it is flawless and perfect
it is inerrant - it is free of error
it is complete - nothing more needs to be added, comprehensive
it is authoritative - it is the final authority
it is sufficient - it does not need any other source of truth
it is determinative - our response to the word determines whose side we are on
The sword is only as effective as we are acquainted with it and practiced with it
Jesus used scripture to combat Satan’s temptation in the wilderness...
it is interesting that Satan also quoted scripture to tempt Jesus…
it is critical for us to know how to understand and use scripture appropriately… and detect when it is being used inappropriately
Praying always...
Praying always...
Prayer is another critical aspect of combatting the enemy
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: 18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; 19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
In many ways, prayer is to permeate all other aspects of the armor God provides
It is our direct communication link with our Commander in Chief
We are to pray...
… at all times
… in the Spirit
.... with supplication
KEEP ALERT with all perseverance … with everything you’ve got!
Conclusion
Conclusion
Satan has been defeated, but he has not surrendered - and won’t until the end of time
He is determined to deceive as many people as he possibly can
The armor of God is for believers to defend and protect themselves from these constant attacks
You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 11 The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. In many ways, the armor of God could be summarized in one word: OBEDIENCE
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
to the extent we are sensitive to the Holy Spirit and obedient, we have victory over Satan
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,

If we have died with him, we will also live with him;
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him;
if we deny him, he also will deny us;
13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful—
for he cannot deny himself.
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”
PUT ON
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
