Return of Christ
Sure
Sudden
Final
4:15 arrival of the Lord (coming, parousia)
5:2 day of the Lord
These may be two separate ‘days’.
A rapture; a return for judgement.
It may be one event Paul is describing, focusing on resurrection in 4 and judgement in 5.
Day of the Lord in Paul’s writings generally refers to the time of God’s wrath pouring out on those who refuse Him.
Predictions of the return of Christ or end of the world.
1967 Jim Jones, as well as the highly intelligent, deeply religious, famous and absolutely crazy.
But what does scripture tell us about the return, second coming, of Christ?
More specifically, what does Paul tell the church in Thessalonica about it?
Times and dates(seasons): Chronos and Kairos - definite and indefinite times
In greater context, Jesus said
He also rebuked the pharisees for asking when they should know.
And Paul reminds them they are already familiar with Christian teachings regarding the end times.
Double emphasis on you!
Like labor pains on a pregnant woman: Expected yet sudden.
And definite/final.
The implication is that the church did not need to be reminded of the facts but of the implications these facts held for their actions.
Martin, D. M. (1995).
1, 2 Thessalonians (Vol.
33, p. 157).
Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers.
So what actions are the result of knowing that the coming of the Lord is sure and will be sudden?
Verses 2 and 3 are really just a gateway to get where the Holy Spirit was directing Paul.
It sounded like he was about to give specifics about that event.
Spaghetti/train tracks.
Instead he offers the instruction to live in contrast to unbelievers!
Be sober - aware, alert, on guard, gregario
Be in the light, as you are light
Encourage one another!
New heaven new earth RENEWED refining, purifying fire more than destructive
God with man
Death of death
Making all things new
It is done!
