We’ve all seen that kid who just HAS to be at the front of the line to go to lunch or go to recess. Even if it means cutting in front of everyone and risking their ire, they do it, just so they can be first. We see this instinct creep up here in the Gospel text with the sons of Zebedee asking to be first in the line. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized this instinct in James and John. He called it the “drum major instinct.”
