A Walk Through Ephesians Pt 4

These past few weeks, we’ve been walking through the book of Ephesians together. I’m particularly excited about this week, because the first 3 chapters were about understanding our identity, knowing God’s heart toward us, who we are and where we stand with Him…
Now we get to talk about WHAT we do with this… WHERE we go from here.

4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,

and he gave gifts to men.”

9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

The New Life

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Okay… Chapters 1-3… WALK WORTHY… woah
4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
We are to walk in UNITY, we are to put our faith and HOPE in ONE God… (No boundaries or division, do you get it yet?)
7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8 Therefore it says,
“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”
9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)
Jesus came, He set aside heaven to come to earth, and offer the perfect sacrifice for us, so we could live forgiven before God the Father, co-heirs with Jesus Christ, filled with the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit…
So UNITY… because of Him… How?
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
In order to promote unity in Him, He gave these gifts to people… Some call these the 5 Fold, some call them the Leadership Gifts… I personally prefer the title, “Servant Leader Gifts”
Apostle -
Prophet -
Evangelist -
Shepherd -
Teacher -
Again, for what purpose? To equip Saints...
Teacher to Prophet, Prophet to Pastor, Pastor to Evangelist etc…
All to the church, all for every saint (not prophets to prophets not apostles to apostles…)
Let’s make sure we put these back in context of the greater chapter and book of Ephesians...
God has done great things for you, He has placed you in miraculous standing before Him. You have a new heart, new mind, new eyes to see…
SO We are to walk in UNITY, we are to walk WORTHY of the calling we have… so God gave these servant leader gifts to help direct and serve the church INTO a place of UNITY in Him...
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
13 is just reaffirming everything we just said… this is for us to continue to pursue unity of faith… knowledge of Jesus… maturity as believers… with the measure of Christ (not some hero we pick, or the older version of us)
14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
So we can stand strong… not easily thrown off track (Evangelist) by circumstance or frustration (Pastors) … not easily deceived by false teaching (Teachers)… bad leaders or bad influence (Apostles) … or by enemies coming against us (Prophets)…
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
We aren’t victims… we are TRUTH SPEAKERS… we LOVE like Christ… we are becoming more and more like Christ.
From Him, the whole body… joined and held together by every joint/gift/role
Okay look! Every joint with which it is “equipped” (why these gifts? To equip saints) that’s how we’re held together!!! When we as SAINTS are equipped, we hold the body together in strength!!!
When that’s working right, the BODY GROWS!!! Built by the very LOVE of CHRIST at work in every believer!!!
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,[f] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
How could you possibly waste your time with that old life? Didn’t you hear everything we just said!?!?!
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Now if you heard a false gospel… that’s another story…
22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
But if you heard the real Gospel… then here is how we live it out… throw away the old way of thinking/living/treating people… Stop lying, stop being selfish, stop putting yourself before everyone else… Instead… receive your NEW SPIRIT AND MIND… Put ON the NEW YOU!
25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
I love this… This is when it gets super practical and clear...
listen, STOP lying! Tell the truth, you are supposed to be unified!
It’s okay to get upset, but don’t do something sinful or foolish when you are upset! When things happen between you guys, deal with it! Deal with it right away!
When you live like this, you take away the enemies opportunity to get in and mess with relationships and feelings.
28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
If you were a thief before… not anymore you aren’t… now, work honestly! When you earn, go from a person who takes from others, to a person that gives to others! That’s what God does in the life of a believer!
29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Don’t gossip, don’t criticize, don’t judge… Encourage each other, comfort each other! Be built up in joy and unity!
People who are listening in from the outside will be refreshed by this unique message!
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Don’t be bitter… don’t be angry… don’t speak slander against each other…
32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
You are Jesus people now… you show kindness… you have a tender heart toward people… you forgive people quickly and greatly… Because you understand the great gift Christ gave you.
