John 1:43–51 ESV
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
John 1:35–51 ESV
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).
Between verse 11 and 12 there is a period of about 6 months. According to Jesus returns to the place John was baptizing. There he meets his first disciples.
Between verse 11 and 12 there is a period of about 6 months. According to Jesus returns to the place John was baptizing. There he meets his first disciples, 5 to be exact. We will read the who text but focus on the 35-42 for some of the sermon.
According to the text how many disciples did Jesus call out? Andrew, Peter, Philip, Nathanael, and Most Likely John
Going back to verses tells us that there were two of his disciples talking to John (Andrew/John), when Jesus happen to be walking by. John then pointed out again that Jesus was the Lamb of God. At this point these two men stop following John and began to follow after Jesus.
John had spiritually father these two men, so these men were well aware that John was only the forerunner to the Messiah and that the Messiah would soon arrive. When Jesus passes by John says Behold the Lamb of God. The word behold has great implication. The greek word translated means ‘to perceive, or take notice’, ‘to turn the eyes, the mind, and the attention, ‘to inspect, examine, gain knowledge of’, and ‘to have regard for and cherish’.
At this point John is telling to his two disciples, I need you to move your focus and your attention from me to Christ. Apparently this resonated with them and they began to follow Jesus.
it resonated with them and they began to follow Jesus.
In this case it was a literal following. They literally began to travel and walk behind Jesus. Jesus feeling them behind him, turned and said to them “What are you seeking”

The answer to this question is the key to our spiritual
In this case it was a literal following. They literally began to travel and walk behind Jesus. Jesus feeling them behind him, turned and said to them “What are you seeking”
If we are not careful we might read right over this question and miss the significance of the question. What are you seeking?
How you and I answer this question determines
Jesus knows that there are multiple reasons why people come to him. The primary reason is to see what God can do for them. The only times they seek him is when they need something from him. They want to Heal them, deliver them, guide them, provide for them, without really knowing him. We often treat God more like a Genie than a Father. Jesus asked what you are seeking? Because he wanted to know are you seeking me to see what you can get from me or are you seeking just me.
Is it Jesus plus something else you want, or is Jesus plus nothing
Most of think that the answer to our problems is to get Jesus to do something for us, but we have it all wrong. Jesus says I am the way, the truth, and the life. The answers you are seeking is in a thing, but in a person.
Most of think that the answer to joyful life is what Jesus can do for us.
Many of crave for the power of God, the gifts of God, but few of us crave for God himself. We want everything God has to offer but none of the cost.
David lived such rich spiritual life. David understood that the answer wasn’t in the amenities that God can provide but in God himself.
Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 42:1 ESV
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
Psalms 16:11
Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalms 16:11
This is why David lived such rich spiritual life. David understood that the answer wasn’t in the amenities that God can provide but in God himself.
Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalms
in his presence there is fullness of Joy. Joy doesn’t come from the blessing that God can provide, Joy comes when we are in the presence of the blesser.
Jeremiah 29:13 ESV
You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
We seek answers and find God. We seek God and find answers.
Children are notorious for asking you for stuff. Give me this, give me that. Can I have this, Can I have that. Isn’t it nice when they don’t ask for anything, and just love on you.
As I was preparing my sermon. Megan come in, reaches down and tells me she loves me. Didn’t ask for anything, she simply loved on me. It moved daddy! and made me want to do something for her.
This is what Jesus means when he says to seek ye first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added to you. He is saying that when you desire me and nothing else, it makes me want to give you the world.
What do you seek?
When is the last time you simply loved on the father?
