SALVATION
SALVATION
GOD’S REMEDY FOR SIN
A. In the Old Testament a substitute had to be offered in place of a sinner.
A. In the Old Testament a substitute had to be offered in place of a sinner.
1. (AV)
20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest shall make an atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them.
2. (AV)
10 And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering, according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven him.
B. In the New Covenant, Christ became that substitute.
1. (AV)
14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
2. (AV)
2. (AV)
7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
C. “Divine forgiveness has never been a mere act of leniency in remitting the penalty of sin. If the penalty is remitted, it is because a substitute has met the demands against the sinner.” (AV)
22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
D. We are not believers because God overlooked our sin, but because Jesus bore our sins.
1. (AV)
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
2. (AV)
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
3. (AV)
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
2. THE FINISHED WORK OF CHRIST
A. Jesus did everything necessary that a Holy God demanded for the payment of sin.
1. (AV)
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
2. (AV)
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
3. (AV)
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
B. “The holy judgments of God were against the sinner because of his sin, yet Christ became the propitiation for the sin of the whole world.”
C. When He cried, “It is finished” , He had done everything necessary to satisfy the payment for sin. (AV)
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
D. The cross absorbed all of my sin and all of God’s wrath!
E.
F. “A practical message in all of this is that if God is satisfied with the death of His Son, and if I am in Christ, He is satisfied with me.”
