Sermon Tone Analysis

Intro

We are currently at a point where Jesus is continuing His defense of claim to be equal to God and that He is God’s Son.

Remember, He had just healed a lame man.

On the Sabbath and there was a question of His authority.

Previously, He had just come from Samaria where there was a 2 day revival based on a young woman that was on the fringe of society, a social outcast who came to believe that she mattered to God, because He visited her personally and told her of all that she had done.

So, here we are, God is visiting us here, and wants to set us free, and sometimes we wonder if He can.

Does He have the authority?

I tell you, I assure you, that He does and He can.

At the end of this morning I want you to understand that there are witnesses to your salvation.

Scripture is trustworthy in defining us, but are we choosing to believe something else about who we are?

Christ has set us free!

Christ has bought us redemption!

Christ has allowed us to be adopted into the family of God!

34 “But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

35 “He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Though John the Baptist was a great voice for God, he did not do any miracles (10:41).

The “signs” were specific works which God had assigned for the Son to do.

These miracles were predicted in the Old Testament (Isa.

35:5–6).

Jesus’ work was a clear manifestation that God was with Him and that He worked through Him (cf.

Nicodemus’ words [John 3:2]; Jesus’ logic [Mark 3:23–29]; and the lesson from an ex-blind man [John 9:30–33]).

3. The Witness of the Father

37 “And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me.

You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.

38 “You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent.

Up to this point, there is only one place where the Father could have testified to who Jesus was, and we get this from the other Gospels

This was of course from the baptism of Jesus

39 “aYou search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;

40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.

41 “I do not receive glory from men;

42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

43 “I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

44 “How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?

If the Jewish Leaders were truly honest with themselves, they would have confessed to not being able to live up to the Law themselves, so in fact they were not even worthy to judge based on the Law.

But again, this was more of an outward sign & not an inward heart change.

The Witness of Moses

45 “Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.

46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.

47 “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

Moses foretold of the coming of Jesus

As a matter of fact when Jesus rose again & spoke with the two disciples on the Emaus road

The interesting thing here is that the Jewish Leaders thought that they were trusting Moses, but they missed him completely.

I don’t want you to miss this.

Application:

So where does this leave us?

What do we do with this?

What is the application?

Again, I will say: Scripture is trustworthy in defining us, but are we choosing to believe something else about who we are?

Christ has set us free!

Christ has bought us redemption!

Christ has allowed us to be adopted into the family of God!

What does Scripture witness about us?

2 Corinthians 5:17

I want to steal something that I heard yesterday from a pastor friend.

2631.

κατάκριμα katakrima, kat-ak´-ree-mah; from 2632; an adverse sentence (the verdict):—condemnation.

Literarily this phrase “No Condemnation” means that there is no process for condemning us anymore.

You see here is the truth of the matter.

Jesus had witnesses who were trustworthy testifying to who He is.

They testify, as in a court of law, there is only one court that Jesus would be concerned about and that is His Father’s court.

His Father’s throne room.

That is the court room that I would like for you to get a hold of.

That is what I want you to get a vision of.

That Jesus, the One who the angels cry “Holy” to over and over and over again, that is who has taken away the process for you to be condemned by the shedding of His own blood.

Now who are you going to believe?

Are you going to believe the lies of those that might be jealous?

Are you going to listen to the deceiver?

From the beginning Satan has been lying to us.

God in the Garden of Eden told Adam & Eve who they were and then Satan came and twisted God’s Word and led them to believe something that was untrue.

Gen. 3:

I want you to get a hold of you really are.

Get a picture of who God says you are, He is trustworthy.
