Jesus’s Father vs. the Father of the Jews

The origin of all that Jesus speaks comes from His Father.
The 1st person of the Trinity.
He is, as he has said, perfectly completing that which God the father has sent him to do.
Everything that He does, is in conjunction with and vitally connected to the Father.
Everything Jesus does is perfectly what the Father would have him to do.
The other side of the coin is that these Jews are doing exactly what their father would have them to do, and they don’t recognize it.
Jesus says to them, I am doing what my father wants me to do, but so are you.
Spiritaully who our Father is makes a difference
The problem with this is, this two Father’s are completely opposed to each other.
And they have been from the beginning.
The problem is they don’t recognize who Jesus is referring to when he speaks of their Father.
Evidenced by the very next statement they make.

Two Paternity Tests

Abraham is our Father.
Listen to what they are claiming.
They are claiming to be descendants of Abraham, and they are . Each of these are most certainly Israelites.
But they are claiming to be more than just Abraham’s descendants, they are claiming to have all the benefits associated with Abraham’s promises and blessings.
Patriarchal community
The problem here though, is that these Jews are thinking purely physical.
They think the blessings and promises given to Abraham are due to them simply because they are descendants of him.
The problem with this belief is that they forget that ancestry and heritage had nothing to do with the promises and blessings of God given to Abraham.
Abraham did not have a strong heritage. He was a pagan man in a pagan.
In , when God confronts Abraham, he does not do this on the basis on some type of heritage that Abraham had, he in his grace just decided to bless Abraham.
So for these Jews to now claim heritage as the basis for God’s promises and blessings, is a faulty.
Translation: it was never Abe’s heritage, it was his faith.
Genesis 15:6 NASB95
Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Hear me out, It has never been about heritage, and it has never been about bloodline.
Genesis 12:3 NASB95
And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
So now, when Jesus is telling them to “do the deeds of Abraham.” He is saying, “have faith.”
If you from Abraham, you will do the deeds of Abraham.
Galatians 3:6–9 NASB95
Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you. So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
Galatians 3:6-
Essentially you are saying that you are from Abraham, but you actually aren’t like Abraham at all.
John 8:40 NASB95
“But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
Hebrews 11:8 NASB95
By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Romans 4:16–18 NASB95
For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, “A father of many nations have I made you”) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”
So here is the test, Abraham is a man of faith.

The Truth

He is the Father of the Faithful.
Having Abraham as spiritual Father would necessitate that these Jews would act like Abraham. in other words, they would believe.
But they do the opposite.
John 8:40 NASB95
“But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
Jesus again tells them that they have a Father, and they again, reject His word and claim to be children of another Father.
John 8:41 NASB95
“You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.”
We are not born of fornication is a rejection of the truth.
The virgin Birth
Mary’s faithful to Jospeh.
The Spirit’s miraculous conception.
The purity of Jesus
The holiness of God.
The perfection of the son.
The ability of the son to carry our sins in the whole on the cross.
The certainty of his resurrection.
His lordship of them and their lives .
They have rejected Christ, while simultaneously claiming to have God as their Father .
But there is another test.
John 8:42 NASB95
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
John 8:42
If you were of God the Father, you would love me.
Do you have love for Christ?
Do you cherish his work?
For these Jews, the answer is no.
They hate him. They seek to kill him.
They do not cherish his work.
They reject his ability to do it.
And herein lies the test.
If they do not love Christ and cherish Christ’s work, then they cannot claim to be children of God.
John 8:43 NASB95
“Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.
So if the first two paternity test reveal that they are not children of Abraham nor God, What will the third reveal.
The final test. It begins in verse 43.
John 8:43 NASB95
“Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.
A rejection of the Word and an inabilty to hear reveals a heart that is still dead in sin. A heart that has happily rejected God.
Ephesians 2:1–2 NASB95
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.
This is who they are.
They cannot hear.
Jesus reveals the identity of their Father.
John 8:44 NASB95
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Characteristics of children of Satan.
Murderer.
John 8:59 NASB95
Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
John 11:53 NASB95
So from that day on they planned together to kill Him.
John 19:4–7 NASB95
Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
Rejecter of truth.
John 8:46–47 NASB95
“Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If I speak truth, why do you not believe Me? “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
Invitation
