Unleavened
What is leaven?
According to the American Heritage Dictionary;
1. An agent, such as yeast, that causes batter or dough to rise, especially by fermentation.
2. An element, influence, or agent that works subtly to lighten, enliven, or modify a whole
Leaven is used to make bread and dough rise
Leaven is an ordinary household product we eat most every day.
BACKGROUND
In the Old Testament we find the nation of Israel.
Do you remember how they ended up in Egypt and eventually became slaves.
Do you remember how they ended up in Egypt and eventually became slaves.
It all goes back to the brothers being jealous of Joseph and plotting to kill him but selling him off instead. Joseph ends up in Egypt. God warned Joseph of the famine that would be in the land so he stored up food.
Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt looking for food, they didn’t recognize their younger brother but he knew who they were. He provided for them their basic needs and look out for them.
Eventually many years later they became the slaves to the Egyptians even though they were more in numbers and mightier than the Egyptians ().
Sin of their fathers brought the Israelites to Egypt. One sin caused much pain and suffering to this nation.
When God finally delivered them from bondage, the Egyptians had to suffer through the plagues because of their king’s unwillingness to let God’s people go. The tenth plague, last plague was the killing of the first born of all Egyptians.
gives the account of the institution of Passover.

When
In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’ ”
God delivered the children of Israel out of bondage.
And you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever.
So the people took their dough before it was leavened, having their kneading bowls bound up in their clothes on their shoulders.
Ex.12
And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they had brought out of Egypt; for it was not leavened, because they were driven out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they prepared provisions for themselves.
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
And the Lord said: “I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

They were instructed to remember their deliverance by getting rid of all leaven for a week each year.

Israel leaving slavery in Egypt is symbolic of a an individual leaving the slavery of a sinful life.
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.
Warning
Jesus would use things the people understood to help get a point across. Here we find Him using leaven to get another point to His disciples.
Ro 16.16
Sometimes the point is slow about being understood though.
Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”
But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Matthew
Jesus is giving a warning to beware, to watch out for the false teachings of some religious leaders.
Take head, beware of, this is serious, warning, be cautious and alert to the dangers of, be on your guard, there are deceivers out there.
Watch out for the false teachers. They will try to sell you a bill of goods you don’t want.
Listen, we have “churches” today doing the very same things.
These pharisees and Sadducee are not much different than the leaders of some churches today. They want you to come to church and feel good. They sugar coat sin so as not to offend people. They are afraid of stepping on toes. They come come to my church I will make you feel good about yourself.
If you are sinning, I’m not going to say anything about it, I don’t want to offend you.
Sin offends God!
If a preacher won’t take a stand against sin he needs to sit down.
We need to feel convicted over sin. If we don’t feel convicted then we are going to keep sinning.
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.

Deut
There is only one gospel, there is only one way to eternal life. Any other way preached is a lie.
Jesus said to keep aware of those false teachers. Don’t give in to their feel good doctrine.
Sin should make us uncomfortable. It is what nailed Jesus to the cross.
Leaven pictures sin.
What happens when we give in to one sin? Another makes its way in and then another.
You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. I have confidence in you, in the Lord, that you will have no other mind; but he who troubles you shall bear his judgment, whoever he is.
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

Watch out for the lies of Satan. He will sneak in a little sin and it will grow.
Don’t be deceived.
Are you leavened?
