For Prayer, ,

For Prayer, ,

1 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
1 Timothy 2:8 ESV
8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling;
A. For whom we should pray (2:1–2a)
1. For those in authority (2:2a)
2. For everyone (2:1)
B. Why we should pray (2:2b): So that we can live in peace and quietness.
C. How we should pray (2:8): “With holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.”

For Salvation

A. The mission (2:3–4): “God … wants everyone to be saved.”
1 Timothy 2:3–4 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
B. The mediator (2:5): Jesus Christ stands between God and people.
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
C. The method (2:6): Salvation was effected by the death of Christ.
1 Timothy 2:6 ESV
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
D. The messenger (2:7): Paul has been chosen by God to serve as a missionary to the Gentiles.
1 Timothy 2:7 ESV
7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

For Character

A. Her responsibilities (2:9–11)
1. In matters of apparel (2:9–10): She should dress modestly as one who professes to worship God.
1 Timothy 2:9–10 ESV
9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
2. In matters of attitude (2:11): She should listen and learn quietly and humbly.
1 Timothy 2:11 ESV
11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness.
B. Her restrictions (2:12–14)
1. The rule (2:12): The woman is not permitted to teach or have authority over a man.
1 Timothy 2:12 ESV
12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.
2. The reason (2:13–14): Two factors are given.
a. The factor of the original creation (2:13): Adam was created before Eve.
1 Timothy 2:13 ESV
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
b. The factor of the original corruption (2:14): Adam was not deceived by Satan as was the woman.
1 Timothy 2:14 ESV
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
C. Her redemption (2:15): She will be saved through childbearing and by living in faith, love, holiness, and modesty.
1 Timothy 2:15 ESV
15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
