The Disciples did not understand the Cross yet, but it forms the basis for all that we do in Christ’s name.
They were engaged in prideful argumentation and ambition, “Who is the greatest?”
Jesus points to a servant’s heart, then gives three examples:
Our Compassion in His Name
What is our attitude toward those who are overlooked, are least-esteemed, are outside?
Jesus embraced the child and equates our receiving of the least, the outcast with our reception of Him.
The disciples still did not understand, later they tried to keep the children away, rather than bring them to Christ.
Our Cooperation in His Name
What is our attitude toward those who profess Christ, but are different in their methods and ministry?
Do we pridefully boast of having the best way, or do we rejoice.
Paul said (ESV)
(ESV)
15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will.
16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment.
18 What then?
Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.
Yes, and I will rejoice,
Even the simplest of acts done in the name of Christ will be remembered.
Our Conduct in His Name
Our lives are to be seasoned with Christ, not driving people away from the Lord.
(ESV)
5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.
6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
We are called to pay close attention to those who are little, or by extension, young in the faith.
