Introduction
Today we come back to our sermon series on the 10 commandments.
As God brought the children of Israel up out of the land of Egypt, He was leading them to the place where they would worship Him, where they would enter into a covenant agreement with God.
They would be His people and He would be there God.
So at Mt Sinai God called Moses up upon the mountain and God brought down the law, the 10 commandments to him to bring tot he people.
And as I have said all along, the 10 commandments are relevant to us today.
Jesus himself said in
Exodus 21
You might ask How Jesus has fulfilled them, He did so with His perfect sacrifice for sin.
Everything that was written about him in the law and the prophets.
He fulfilled them and they were sealed in the New Covenant instituted by His own blood.
So then what of these commandments?
Jewish tradition holds that even Solomon taught the nothing, even the little notes of the law could not pass away… They must be taught faithfully for the glory of God.
So the 10 commandments tell us this: Gad has a law, in this body we cannot keep the law perfectly and in fact the law itself shows we are guilty before God.
So we are guilty before God., But the blood of Jesus has saved us through our confession and admission that we are sinners, lost and hopeless, but inviting Him into our hearts Jesus saved us… He has made us justified in front of God.
So the word of God, and the law, more especially the 10 commandments are there to guide us, help us and to show us what is pleasing in the sight of God.
The law cannot be done away with.....
Now moving on.................
So farr before today we have looked at the first 4 commandments,
You shall have no other Gods before me.
Now so far before today we have looked at the first 4 commanments,
You shall not make any idols
You shall not take the name of the Lord God in vain.
And last week, Honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
These are the 4 commandments that deal with our relationship with God himself and the vertical nature of the cross is symbolized in this portion of the law.
And today we begin the second section of the law, the horizontal portion that we can symbolized in are relational to each other.
So lets begin today, take your bibles and lets go to , verse 12 and lets look at the 5th Commandment.
So when we look at this passage we find there are two sections to it, there is the command itself and then we come across the section we could call its promise or consequences for following it and or not following it.
But what can we see from this commandment that will help us go forth, lets look at these thoughts....
1.
The Command Reminds Us of Our Eternal Parent.
Let me say this first:
When I look at this 5th command, and it says “Honor my Father and Mother...”, I am reminded that the call to honor my parents, helps me remember My Heavenly Father.
Now why would I begin with this thought today?
I believe the idea itself reminds us the fact that God is the one who brought mankind into this world and in love he parents us, guides us and is in our lives.
He is the one who created:
He is the one who created:
He is the one who created:
If you looked back to the first two chapters of our Bibles, we see that God in Genesis chapters 1 and 2, He formed man from the dust of the earth and woman from Adam.
He created them and brought life to them.
He was their parent if you will and as such He is our eternal parent.
He was their parent if you will and as such He is our eternal parent.
He is our parent, all that we do in being parents, bringing children into this world is because of Him.
Consider my thought if you will, We do not create… we are not God, we do not say let us make a child and “poof” it happens, no not at all.
Our ability to have children is based solely on what God has entrusted to us.
God told man to be fruitful and to multiply… reminds us of this after God had created mankind.
And thus it has been for every generation of people to come into this world since that time when Adam and Eve began to “pro-create” - they were doing so after God had blessed them them and given them the command to fill this earth.
And thus it has been for every generation of people to come into this world since that time when Adam and Eve began to “pro-create” - they were doing so after God had blessed them them and given them the command to fill this earth.
With all this in mind my friends, when we look to our parents, as we love them and honor them, the very fact that we are here means that God gave us to them and their presence in our lives should cause us to look toward heaven and see that He is there and that He loves us.
And my friends, in , we see the parable of the prodigal son, and as the son went astray , left his earthly Father to persue his own desires, what the son left first and foremost was God.
For he did not honor his earthly father and in the same measure did not honor God.
Let me share this passage with you to consider…
Just as we honor our parents, then do we honor God the Father in the same way?
Where is His Honor....
The command should point us to our eternal parent, the Lord God Almighty.

And then I am reminded of this thought my friends...
And then I am reminded of this thought my friends...
2. The Command Reminds Us of the Duty to our Parents.
When I look at this command
2. The Command Reminds Us of the Duty to our Parents.
I use the word duty to remind us that it is something we are supposed to be doing, it is not a well command to be taken lightly, the Lord says for us to honor our father and our mother.
So lets look at this command my friends..
Now ask yourself this question,
Q.... Why has God called this truth to our attention?
Now the Hebrew word for honor is cab-bed, means to esteem or respect, to honor those set above us.... in this case the truth is our parents.
But it has a unique meaning attached to the word, it can also refer to that which should weight heavy on our minds, our hearts...
Listen this command is not something to be taken lightly, our parents should always be upon our mind to treat them with respect....
So let me share with you why I believe we are called to honor our parents....
So let me share with you why I believe we are called to honor our parents....
_______________
A. I think first of all because it is where we have our beginning.
It is our parents, our Mother and Father who through the work of God in their lives bring children into the world.
Our days begin with them, and in the natural order of things it is where we learn, grow and develop as a young man and young woman.
Each of the gospel accounts and later on in the other epistles of the New Testament we as children are reminded to honor our mother and our Father.
And yes the Old Testament command us to honor them as well.
The command has a purpose, we cannot forget about them ...
One of my favorite passages in the New Testament, I see that Jesus even demonstrates that with the care of Mary, He honored here by making sure She would be taken care off in the later years of her life.
B. They provided for us, as they through the work of God brings children into the world, they provide for every need of the children.
Now listen, I said need and not want… The provide protection, shelter, food and sustenance of every kind....
Jesus honored here even as he was moments from his death on the cross.
What can we learn from them...

As such children are called to revere and respect their mother and father.
When I look back, I cannot say my dad did everything right in my life, but I can say this..
He tried to teach me right and wrong, he tried to instill in me certain values and he tried to provide for me as best he could in the hopes that I would be taken care off in this life.
I love him for that very fact, and I respect him.
Do you love your mother and your father?
Now someone might say, but preacher what about bad parents, those who did not love, who did not care for, those who did not do what was right for me… what about them.?
My only answer here can be… regardless our position cannot change.
They will have to give an account of their life before God one day..... and so shall you.
Do you best to do what is right and honor the Word of God in your life.
God calls us to honor our Father and Mother and leave the rest to Him
And then finally I come to my last thought today...
3. The Command Reminds Us of a Promise.
3. The Command Reminds Us of a Promise.
This command has a promise attached to it.
Oh my friends pay attention to this command and to what it is saying to us today?
Look back to our text today my friends....
So if you do what is right… your days might be long in the land the Lord your God has given you...
So the word of God says if you want a long life, let your obedience, your reverence and honor be given to them… for in this it is right.
What do you think about such a command?
