Genesis 13:5–18 CSB
5 Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. 6 But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together, 7 and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.) 8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives. 9 Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.” 10 Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the Lord’s garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. 13 (Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the Lord.) 14 After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west, 15 for I will give you and your offspring forever all the land that you see. 16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted. 17 Get up and walk around the land, through its length and width, for I will give it to you.” 18 So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the Lord.

Both Abraham and Lot had been blessed and they are both quite wealthy.

Genesis 13:6 CSB
6 But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together,
The amount of live stalk Abraham had received in Egypt probably added to this difficulty,
Genesis 12:16 CSB
16 He treated Abram well because of her, and Abram acquired flocks and herds, male and female donkeys, male and female slaves, and camels.
Genesis 12:16 ESV
16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
Genesis 12:15–17 ESV
15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. 17 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
This made it difficult for Abraham and lot to dwell in close proximity to one another. due to the amount of possessions and limited recourses
Genesis 12:18 ESV
18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?
Genesis 13:7 CSB
7 and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.)
Genesis 12:19 ESV
19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.”
Genesis 12:20 ESV
20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.
Due to this fact that both Abraham and Lot had flocks, herds, and tents, and there was limited resources and areas available for grazing a problem existed, and this problem led to strife between the herds man of Lot and Abraham.
The word strife means deep conflict. In latter texts of Scripture, it comes to mean a league dispute but here it simply means an argument.
This strife was surly over water and vegetation for the animals.

Genesis 13:8–9 CSB
8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please, let’s not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives. 9 Isn’t the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

8 Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.
Genesis 11:8–9 ESV
8 So the Lord dispersed them from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. And from there the Lord dispersed them over the face of all the earth.

However, Abraham lot the first choice of available land. and then He decided to take what was left.
Lot was Abraham’s Nephew, his brother’s son and because of this it added to the fact that Abraham did not want strife between them, an idea that is also seen in

Psalm 133:1 CSB
1 How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!
Because of the fact that unity was not possible they chose to separate from each other. This principal can also be found in other parts of Scripture
Acts 15:39 CSB
39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company, and Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed off to Cyprus.
Genesis 13:7 ESV

1 Corinthians 7:12–15 CSB
12 But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13 Also, if any woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce her husband. 14 For the unbelieving husband is made holy by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy by the husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is they are holy. 15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him leave. A brother or a sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace.
because of this disagreement Abrahm offerd lot to take first choice
1 Cor
So because of this disagreement Abrahm offerd lot to take first choice
So, Abraham offered lot first Choice and said if you go to the left I will go to the right, if you go to the right I will go to the Left”
Right would have referd to the south
Left would have referd to the North
Right would have referd to the south
Left would have referd to the North
What a difference we see here in Abraham’s faith from before He knew what God had already promised and believed it. He knew he could trust fully in Him.
What a difference we see here in Abrahm’s faith from before He knew what God had already promiced and belived it. He knew he could trust fully in HIm.

Are you making choices today that reflect this same faith?

Lot’s Choice (V. 10-13)

Genesis 13:10–13 CSB
10 Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the Lord’s garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. The Lord’s Garden is an illusion to Eden in that it was well watered.
Egypt is throught the book of Genesis a place to which people resort to in times of food shortage.
the Nile ensured the harvest to be more reliable than that of cannon.
In addition, the powerful springs in the Jorden valley and beside the dead sea create fertile areas according to the entire book of Genesis this was a fertile and wonderful place before the destruction of Sodom and Gomora.
Moses makes a clear point that this was before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorah. This casts a shadow over Lot’s decision which is about to be announced. things are not necessarily as good as the look. the form of this word destroy is only used twice in Genesis, here and referring to the flood.

Genesis 13:11 CSB
11 So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other.
Lot selected the plain of Jorden which was well irrigated and filled with vegetation
The Jorden valley was the center for moon worship and was characterized by unbelievable wickedness that centered in the city of Sodom.
all indications are that lot tolerated this wickedness, but not without a vexed conscience

little did he know that the physical beuty of the area was a small comparison in the distruction to come. When Lot seperated from Abrahm God came to Abrahm and reafirmed the covenent promice
Genesis 13:12–13 CSB
12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. 13 (Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the Lord.)
This event would have greatly consoled Abrahm. He then moved northword to Mamre, which was in vicinity of Hebron. and once again built an alter to the Lord
These verses Hint at the fate that was to come to Sodom which one can see in Chapter 19
this word evil is also used to describe the world at the time of the flood sinning immensely or great sinners is only used here.
Great sinners are used only here, and shows the extreme seriousness of the sin of Sodom. It also shows us that the fate of this city will come, and this will exclaim lots mistake in his Choice.
Lot chose based on what looked good, and found the looks to be deceiving and corrupt.
An individual is known by His choices, Lot’s choice put him in contact with the sodomities which were people known for living lives contrary to God’s way.

Who do you associate with that lives contrary to God’s way, and what are we doing that we think is paradise, but will turn into disaster?

The Promise (V. 14-18 )

he Promice 14-18
Genesis 13:12 ESV
12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom.
The city of Hebron lies twenty-two miles south of Jeruslem on the road to Beersheba. The antiquity of the site is implied by the fact that it was built seven years before Zoan in Egypy (

Genesis 13:14–18 CSB
14 After Lot had separated from him, the Lord said to Abram, “Look from the place where you are.
Genisis 13:14-18
God did not get involved until after Lot had departed, He had been watching and observing, but letting Abraham and lot deal with the issue on their own. and each one will have to live with the consequences of their choices.
This is an important note as we raise Children, we need to train and teach them, but sometimes we need to let them make their own choices and live with the consequences of those choices.
After Lot, departed God came to Abraham and reaffirms His promise to Him
After Lot departed God came to Abrahm an reafirms His promice to Him
He promises Land
He promices Land
Genesis 13:15 CSB
