Acts 3:1-10
Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s”

In the Name of Jesus…
Teach us today that your power to heal, your power to forgive and your power to save is totally assessable to us in the name of Jesus for there is power in the name of Jesus. Power to change us, power to correct us, power to convict us, power to comfort us, power to conform us, and the power to care for us. There is power in the name of Jesus. We ask you O’ God that with the power of your Holy Spirit that you used to raise Christ Jesus from the dead that you will also give life to our mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwells in each one of us.
At one point in his life, William Cowper, an eighteenth-century English poet, became suicidal. Deciding to end it all, he took poison. But it didn’t work. Then he intended to throw himself into the Thames River; he was somehow miraculously restrained on the bridge. The next day he allowed himself to fall on to a knife, but the blade broke off!
It is in the precious name of your Son and our Savior the Lord Christ Jesus that we ask it all and all God’s children said Amen.

The first thing that we need to realize this morning is the connection between our passage this morning and the last verse that we dealt with last week. , “Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” The events of chapter 3 are really a real time illustration of this verse showing the Lord continuing to use signs and wonders as He added to the church daily. While the Holy Spirit is not named in this chapter, He is constantly and certainly at work in and through the ministry of the apostles.
“God Moves in a Mysterious Way,” the first stanza of which reads:
Finally, he resorted to hanging himself; yet he was rescued when fell unconscious and was revived.
Whenever God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are about to work in a supernatural and miraculous way there is a particular formula, a particular scenario that they often you used; (1) They set the stage for the miracle, (2) They supply the source of the miracle, (3) They select a soul that shows great glory to God for the miracle. We see all three of these events in this passage this morning.
Following all these foiled suicide attempts, Cowper picked up a copy of the Bible and began reading it. “God Moves in a Mysterious Way,” the first stanza of which reads:
, Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.”

God moves in a mysterious way
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
Peter and John close associates, according to , “And so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” They were partners in a fishing business before their call as disciples. With John’s brother James, they made up the inner circle of the twelve. Jesus entrusted them with making preparations for the Passover meal. They alone of the twelve followed Jesus to the high Priest’s house after His arrest Peter and John were the first of the disciples to visit the tomb after the resurrection. The early chapters of Acts often find them traveling and ministering together. Peter and John are found often together in the Scriptures, they ran together to the tomb on the first Easter Sunday morning and they ministered to the Samaritans who believed on Jesus Christ but now they were filled with the Holy Spirit and no longer competing for greatness but faithfully building the church together. , “ Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down down the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.” The text tells us that they were going up to the temple, but pastor why were they going up to the temple. Because it was their custom to go up to the temple frequently for prayer. At this particular time it was for the hour of prayer at the ninth hour, this would have been around three is the afternoon. Remember according to the Jewish watch, which counted the hours from sunrise to sunset. Look at , Evening and morning and at noon, I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice.” The first hour of prayer was in the morning and was really the third hour and then again at the sixth hour which was at noon. Peter and John are going to pray at the ninth hour which we the time of the evening sacrifice, during this time the temple would be full and the crowds would be at their peak. So as God would have it, even though the temple was full of people, God is still going the set the stage for this divine encounter between a man born lame and Peter and John. No doubt thousands of people were there at the temple but God directed these two to this one beggar. There were nine gates that led to the Court of Gentiles, but the gate that God led the beggar was to the gate called Beautiful. The Beautiful Gate was the “Eastern Gate” that led to the court of women, the Gate was called Beautiful because it was it was large and ornate, the Jewish historian Josephus tells us it was made out of Corinthian brass and took twenty men to close. It was certainly was a choice place for a lame man to beg. Now the giving of alms was an important part of the Jewish faith, so beggars found it profitable to be near the temple. Since the believers had pooled their resources, the two apostles had no money to give; but money was not what the man needed the most. He needed mercy not money he needed healing for heart and he needed salvation for his very soul. This lame man, lame from birth is a perfect illustration of us, just think about, look at these three things.
His wonders to perform;
And rides upon the storm.
3 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.
(1) He was born lame, and all of us are born lame, born unable to walk in a way that please God. David said this in the Psalms, , “5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” You see our father Adam had a fall and passed on his lameness to all of his descendants. You see we found Death in Adam but we found Life in Christ , “12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. 18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

He plants His footsteps in the sea,
(2) This man was a poor beggar, and we are poor beggar, we have been bankrupt by our many sins, and we cannot paid the sin debt that we owe, so we need someone to gives us alms or to paid the tremendous debt that we owe. So we find ourselves laying and languishing in our sins at the beautiful gate of salvation without the funds to get in and we cried out for help and our Savior Christ Jesus answers. , “ 36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. 37 And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, 38 and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
The gospel reveals the purpose and power of Jesus Christ to deal with sin and all of its effects. Holy Scripture uses a range of images to express the comprehensiveness of salvation. As we approached today’s text we see a man who was lame from birth laying at the gate, called the Beautiful Gate begging for alms. Begging for monetary gifts to meet his physical and material needs. Dear Heavenly Father...

41 “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” 44 Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
Let us pray...
Teach us today that your power to heal, your power to forgive and your power to save is totally accessible to us in the name of Jesus for there is power in the name of Jesus. Power to change us, power to correct us, power to convict us, power to conform us, power to care us, and the power to comfort for us. There is power in the name of Jesus.
(3) This man was outside the temple and as sinners who have not accepted Christ Jesus we were once all outside the temple, , “11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.” If we have not accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are still outside the temple no matter our close to the beautiful gate of Salvation we might be.
We ask you O’ God that with the power of your Holy Spirit that you used to raise Christ Jesus from the dead that you will also give life to our mortal bodies through His Spirit that dwells in each one of us.
Dear Heavenly Father...
It is in the precious name of your Son and our Savior the Lord Christ Jesus that we ask it all and all God’s children said Amen.
They supply the source of the miracle,
, “4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.”
11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
We ask you O’ God that with the power of your Holy Spirit that you used to raise Christ Jesus from the dead that you will also give life to our mortal bodies through His Spirit that dwells in each one of us.
The first thing that we need to realize this morning is the connection between our passage this morning and the last verse that we dealt with last week. , “Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” The events of chapter 3 are really a real time illustration of this verse showing how the Lord continued to use signs and wonders as He added to the church daily. While the Holy Spirit is not named in this chapter, it is clear that He is constantly and certainly at work in and through the ministry of the apostles.
Four aspects of this miracle are important for us to take a look at this morning. (a) It was astonishing, (b) it was done in the name of Jesus Christ, (c) it was absolutely immediate , and (d it was all-inclusive.
4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.
Whenever God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are about to work in a supernatural and miraculous way there is a particular formula, a particular scenario that they often you used; (1) They set the stage for the miracle, (2) They supply the source for the miracle, (3) They select a soul that will show great glory to God for the miracle. We see all three of these events in this passage this morning and it was all done in the name of Jesus Christ!
It is in the precious name of your Son and our Savior the Lord Christ Jesus that we ask it all and all God’s children said Amen.
(a1) It was astonishing, in response to the beggar’s cries for alma, Peter and John fixed their gaze upon him, Atenizo, is the same word used in to describe the intense gaze of the Apostles as they watch Christ Jesus ascend into heaven, they too were astonished. Peter and John instructed the beggar to “look at us!” With eager anticipation, the beggar began to give them his full attention, for he was expecting to receive something from them, but he receive much more than money, he received mercy. Peter, tells him, “ silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give to you…!” Can you imagine what was going on in this beggar’s mind, what could be better that silver or gold, he must have thought. He would soon see the rich and royal sovereign of God’s will for His life manifest it’s self. Out of all the beggar’s at the temple God determine that today, salvation and total health would come upon this soul, this beggar would received abundantly more that he asked or imagined and God proved to be the source of his supply.
Setting the stage for the miracle.

While the Holy Spirit is not named in this chapter, it is clear that He is constantly and certainly at work in and through the ministry of the apostles.
(b2) It was done in the name of Jesus Christ.... The beggar had little reason to believe in Jesus Christ, for years and years Jesus had not changed his plight in life, never meet his physical needs or material needs and by the way was not this Jesus Christ executed as a blasphemer. So this beggar must have seen this offer of receiving something more valuable that silver or gold as a really hollow exchange. Yet, Peter offered him total healing and forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. To do something in the name of Jesus the Messiah from Nazareth, was to do something powerful and consistent with His walk, His will, and His way. Peter was not acting in the authority given him in , “10 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.” So Peter commands the beggar to “Rise and Walk.”

, Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.”
(c3) It was absolutely immediate, “ And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.” The healing was immediate, Peter did not refer him to a physical therapists for six or seven more weeks of strength training before he could rise and walk again. Before because of the power in the name of Jesus, the bones healed, the ankles were strength, the balance and stability, was made manifest, and rose from his previous plight into the light of God’s grace and mercy!
Setting the stage for the miracle.
Peter and John became close associates, according to Scripture early in the ministry of Christ Jesus. , “And so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” They were partners in a fishing business before their call as disciples. With John’s brother James, they made up the inner circle of the twelve. The early chapters of Acts often find them traveling and ministering together. Peter and John are found often together in the Scriptures, they ran together to the tomb on the first Easter Sunday morning and they ministered to the Samaritans who believed on Jesus Christ, they were entrusted with making preparations for the Passover meal, and they with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. But now they were filled with the Holy Spirit and no longer competing for greatness but faithfully building the church together. It is a great thing when you can find someone who no longer wants to complete but wants to faithfully served the Lord in unity.
(d4) It was all-inclusive, “ And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.” Peter and John did not help the beggar gain his footing or coordination, his healing was all- inclusive, when God heal, his healing is complete. Just like when God’s save us, it is all-inclusive and complete,
, And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” This beggar was so overjoyed and overwhelmed with his new found ability to walk that walk was not enough he leaped for joy. His joy and excitement knew no bounds. Like a child with a new toy he could not resist using his newly found ability. My youngest granddaugther just recently learning to walk and she is so overjoyed and overwhemled by her new found ability, that we have to constantly tell her to stop running and just walk. But she cannot contain herself, she runs and leaps for joy.
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
10 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.
, “ Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down down the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”
, Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.”
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
They select a soul that shows great glory to God for the miracle.
The text tells us that they were going up to the temple, but pastor why were they going up to the temple? Because it was their custom to go up to the temple frequently for prayer. At this particular time it was for the hour of prayer at the ninth hour, this would have been around three is the afternoon. Remember according to the Jewish watch, they counted the hours from sunrise to sunset. The first hour of prayer was in the morning and was really the third hour and then again at the sixth hour which was at noon. Peter and John are going to pray at the ninth hour which was the time of the evening sacrifice, during this time the temple would have be full and the crowds would be at their peak. So, as God would have it, even though the temple was full of people, God is still going the set the stage for this divine encounter between a man born lame and Peter and John.
, “ And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what happened to him. While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s.”
Now we must remember that the giving of alms was an important part of the Jewish faith, so beggars found it profitable to be near the temple. Since the believers had pooled their resources, the two apostles had no money to give; but money was not what the man needed the most. He needed mercy not money, he needed healing for heart and he needed salvation for his very soul.
, “ Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down down the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”
There are three results that in the healing of this beggar that show great glory to God for this miracle.
This lame man, lame from birth is a perfect illustration of us, just think about, look at these three things.

(1) Was the joy of the beggar himself, how he praised God for his healing, his unhinged praise was contagious , the text clearly says when everyone saw him and recognized him as the same one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms, now was walking, yes leaping with joy because of what God had done. Jesus tells us in
No doubt thousands of people were there at the temple but God directed these two to this one beggar. There were nine gates that led to the Court of Gentiles, but the gate that God led the beggar was to the gate called Beautiful. He needed mercy not money, he needed healing for heart and he needed salvation for his very soul.
(1) He was born lame, and all of us are born lame, born unable to walk in a way that pleases God. David said this in the Psalms, , “5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” You see our father Adam had a fall and passed on his lameness on to all of his descendants. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
, “11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” , “24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
(2) This man was a poor beggar, and we are poor beggars, we have been bankrupt by our many sins, and we cannot paid the sin debt that we owe, so we need someone to gives us alms or to paid the tremendous debt that we owe. So we find ourselves laying and languishing in our sins at the beautiful gate of salvation without the ability to get in and we cried out for help and our Savior Christ Jesus answers. , “ 36 One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table.
This lame man, lame from birth is a perfect illustration of us, just think about, look at these three things.
24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
(2) The second result was that a praise and worship broke out among the people, the text says and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happen,” They were giving praise to God because of His graciousness to this beggar, it is important to remember that we all are beggars also and that God’s grace is available to us as well with the same power in the name of Jesus.
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

(3) Thirdly, the miracle was a testimony to the people that show great glory to God. All the people were filled with wonder and amazement, the miracle was undeniable, because it had happen right before their eyes to someone they knew. This was not unlike the knowleglement , before the Jerusalem council in , “ Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.”
(2) This man was a poor beggar, and we are poor beggars, we have been bankrupt by our many sins, and we cannot paid the sin debt that we owe, so we need someone to gives us alms or to paid the tremendous debt that we owe. (3) This man was outside the temple and as sinners before we accepted Christ Jesus we were all once outside the temple, , “11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.”
A couple of weeks ago we talked about the fact that God designed miracles to act as a sign to attract attention and to point people to His divine truth. This healing of the blind really accomplishs both. Look at the closing verse of our passage this morning, While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. Why did God want these people moved and assemble in Solomon’s portico, but this is the place where Peter is about to preach his second sermon to them, where Peter is about to preach Christ to them!
If we have not accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are still outside the temple no matter our close to the beautiful gate of Salvation we might be.

The sovereign source supplied the miracle.
, “4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.”
If we have not accepted Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are still outside the temple no matter our close to the beautiful gate of Salvation we might be.
Four element of this sovereign miracle are important for us to take a look at this morning. (a) It was astonishing, (b) it was done in the name of Jesus Christ, (c) it was absolutely immediate , and (d) it was all-inclusive.

, “4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. (a1) It was astonishing, in response to the beggar’s cries for alms, Peter and John fixed their gaze upon him, Atenizo, is the same word used in to describe the intense gaze of the Apostles as they watch Christ Jesus ascend into heaven, they too were astonished. Peter and John instructed the beggar to “look at us!” With eager anticipation, the beggar began to give them his full attention, for he was expecting to receive something from them, but he receive much more than money, he received mercy. Peter, tells him, “silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give to you…!” Can you imagine what was going on in this beggar’s mind, what could be better that silver or gold, he must have thought. He would soon see the rich and royal sovereignty of God’s will for His life manifest it’s self. Out of all the beggar’s at the temple God determined that today, that salvation and total health would come upon this soul, this beggar, this man would received abundantly more that he asked or imagined and God proved to be the sovereign source of his supply.
(b2) It was done in the name of Jesus Christ.... The beggar had little reason to believe in Jesus Christ, for years and years Jesus had not changed his plight in life, for years and years Jesus had never meet his physical needs or material needs, but now at such a time as this, the sovereign has decided to move in a most powerful way. Many even the beggar might have thought, this Jesus Christ was executed as a blasphemer, how can His name possibly help me? Little did he know that “there is power in the name of Jesus.” So this beggar must have seen this offer of receiving something more valuable that silver or gold as a really hollow exchange. Yet, Peter offered him total healing and forgiveness in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. To do something in the name of Jesus the Messiah from Nazareth, was to do something that was powerful and consistent with His walk, His will, and His way. Peter here was just acting in the authority given him in , “10 And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.” Peter understood that there is power in the name of Jesus, so Peter commands the beggar to “Rise and Walk.”

(c3) It was absolutely immediate, “And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.” The healing was immediate, Peter did not refer him to a physical therapists for six or seven more weeks of strength training before he could rise and walk again. Why? Because of the power in the name of Jesus! The power in the name of Jesus healed his bones healed, the name of Jesus strengthen his ankles were strength, the name of Jesus gave balance and stability to his body, and the name of Jesus allow him to rise from the darkness of his previous plight into the light of God’s grace and mercy! There is power in the name of Jesus! This Jesus, who is the stone that was rejected by many, rejected by the builders has become the chief cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” There is power in the name of Jesus!
(d4) It was all-inclusive, “And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.” Peter and John did not help the beggar gain his footing or coordination, his healing was all- inclusive, when God heals, his healing is complete.

My youngest granddaughter, Grace just recently learned how to walk and she is so overjoyed and overwhelmed by her new found ability, that we have to constantly tell her to stop running and just walk. But she cannot contain herself, she runs and leaps for joy.

This healing of the beggar really accomplishes both. Look at the closing verse of our passage this morning, While he clung to Peter and John, all the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon’s. Why did God want these people moved and assemble in Solomon’s portico? Because this was is the place where Peter is about to preach his second sermon to the newly formed church. God used the miracle of this beggar who had been lame from birth as the opening illustration for Peter’s next sermon!

But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, saying, “What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.”
Martin Luther once said, “Miracles take place not because they are performed but because they are believed.” Simon Lake believed in the possibilities of a submarine long before it was perfected. The Wright brothers believed in air transportation years before their daring flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
A couple of weeks ago we talked about the fact that God designed miracles to act as a sign to attract attention and to point people to His divine truth.

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village, where He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a home. He didn’t go to college. He never visited a big city. He never traveled two-hundred miles from the place where He was born. He did none of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. He was only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned against Him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While He was dying his executioners gambled for his garments, the only property He had on earth. When He was dead. He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today He is the central figure of the human race. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on this earth as much as that one solitary life.
