Fifty Sermon Outlines on the Way of Salvation The Reason for Our Failures (Matt. 17:14–21)

THE REASON FOR OUR FAILURES

MATT. 17:14–21

Matthew 17:14–21 KJV 1900
And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Fifty Sermon Outlines on the Way of Salvation The Reason for Our Failures (Matt. 17:14–21)

Introduction. We often see our failures but seldom do we try to find the real reason for them—we always come with an explanation, but is this the reason? What do we do about it?

Fifty Sermon Outlines on the Way of Salvation The Reason for Our Failures (Matt. 17:14–21)

1. When homes fail, each places the blame on the other—divorce is the result …

2. What about juvenile delinquency—What is the cause—What are we doing about it?…

3. Business fails, national economy staggers, politics is blamed …

4. Crops fail—insects, drouth, etc.…

5. When we fail to get rain, there is conversation and complaining about it—some have employed “rain-makers” …

6. When our churches fail to meet the expectations in results, we start looking for a new pastor …

SOME THINGS WE MUST REMEMBER FROM THE SCRIPTURES:

Matthew 19:6–8 KJV 1900
Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
Proverbs 22:6 KJV 1900
Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Prov
2 Chronicles 7:17–19 KJV 1900
And as for thee, if thou wilt walk before me, as David thy father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded thee, and shalt observe my statutes and my judgments; Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel. But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them;
2 Chron. 7:17
2 Chron. 7:18-
2 Chronicles 7:18–20 KJV 1900
Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel. But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations.
James 5:16 KJV 1900
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Hebrews 10:23–25 KJV 1900
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Hebrews 10:23-2

THE ANSWER OF THE LORD

Matthew 17:20–21 KJV 1900
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

JESUS IS THE ANSWER

Matthew 17:

Fifty Sermon Outlines on the Way of Salvation The Reason for Our Failures (Matt. 17:14–21)

1. Unbelief …

2. Lack of faith …

3. Lack of prayer …

4. Lack of fasting …

(a) This means much more than penitence …

(b) It means being more interested in the will of God than in our personal welfare …

Conclusion. We have failed in many categories. Let us go back to Calvary, find the solution, and make a new start.
