1 Corinthians 4:14–17 ESV
I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.
1 Cor 4:14-17
Hebrews 13:23 ESV
You should know that our brother Timothy has been released, with whom I shall see you if he comes soon.
Heb 13:33
2 Timothy 4:6 ESV
For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.
Paul knows it’s near the end of his life.
2 Timothy 1:1 ESV
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus,
apostle - sent out - have a mission that he’s assigned to by Jesus.
* of Whom -of Christ Jesus
Paul puts his position to that of the rest of the
Christ - annointed one. Refers to prophets, priests and kings. Jesus is all of these.
Exodus 29:29 ESV
“The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him; they shall be anointed in them and ordained in them.
1 Samuel 3:9 ESV
Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
1 Sam 3:
‘by’ the will of God - this is the means by which he’s the apostle.
* How is Paul an apostle? - by God’s will.
Galatians 1:1 ESV
Paul, an apostle—not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead—
this ‘will’ of God is subjective will of God - Paul’s opinion but it is God’s will.
*Why? - according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.
Because we are the children of God, being a part of the body of Christ - it is specifically for the people God has chosen.
in - engrafted, fellowship and with union in Christ Jesus.
redemption, have eternal life, God’s grace, brought near to God. We’re all one.
2 Timothy 1:9 ESV
who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
What is the end goal of Paul’s apostleship? - to go and tell people about the promise that we have.
Paul qualifies his apostleship with the above 3 points.
There were apostles of other people like John the Baptist
1 Corinthians 1:10 ESV
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.
:
1 Corinthians 1:10–13 ESV
I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. What I mean is that each one of you says, “I follow Paul,” or “I follow Apollos,” or “I follow Cephas,” or “I follow Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
Paul starts off all his letters introducing himself as a Christian.
‘by the will of God’ - people did question Paul’s authority.
Why do you do anything that you do? spreading the Gospel and showing the Gospel in our lives.
2 Timothy 1:2 ESV
To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Jesus’ deity is established in this verse. What about the Holy Spirit?
The purpose of this statement is not to establish the Trinitarian
Father and the Son are most responsible for the grace, mercy and peace but it does come through the Holy Spirit.
Father planned it all out, Christ made it happen.
Father and Christ are in heaven. The Holy Spirit is with us.
Does grace, mercy and peace come from only the Father and Jesus?
Why grace, mercy and peace in that order? This is the order in which our salvation happen..
‘Mercy’ - comes only in 2 Timothy and KJV has it in Titus. The rest of Paul’s epistles has only grace and peace.
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
Father-Son relationship that Paul and Timothy have that ought to be imitated in the church. Children receive instructions from the father. Children mimic the fathers, receive encouragement, discipline, admonishment and correction from the father. Biggest thing is love and sacrifice.
2 Timothy 2:2 ESV
and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
1 Timothy 2:2 ESV
for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
Timothy saw a lot of things in Paul - how he was persecuted, how he responded to that and also all the instructions that has come to him through these letters.
Grace God the Father
Mercy
Mercy from & Christ Jesus our Lord
Peace
Mercy - outward manifestation of pity. Meet the need of him who shows the need. Not punishing us as we deserve.
Eg. The Good Samaritan showing pity on the man who was beaten and robbed.
God saved us and had the power to do it at great cost.
Paul knew God’s mercy in abundance-
1 Timothy 1:15–16 ESV
The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
1 Tim 1:15
Peace - the lack of hostility, joining of opposing sides, restored relationship of God and us
the lack of hostility, joining of opposing sides, restored relationship of God and us
Because of the work of Christ the wall of sin that separates us from God has been removed.
the all that divides people of various differences like class, station in life, gender etc. has been removed.
Timothy’s father - may not have been a believer - Lystra - intermarriage
Matthew 28:19 ESV
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
