Quick description of Jesus

The reason we have come together today is because a Jewish carpenter,
who rose out of obscurity
Heading 1
by did signs and wonders and miracles,

He did id signs and wonders and miracles,
He healed the sick,He cast out demons
He fed 5 thousand people
He taught and preached about a better life here on earth and one in heaven
and in exchange for all of His good deeds
and acts of kindness
the people in His day, killed Him
The religious leaders were jealous of Him
and longed for power and attention of the people
They sought to discredit Him
they sought to expose Him as a liar and a fraud
and when they couldn’t do that
they him killed

Why they wanted Jesus dead

this person, who only did good
this person, who only sought to tell the truth
this person, who only taught us to love one another
The chief priests, and scribes, and elders sought to kill this Man
to silence Him,

They played into God’s hands

But they did not know they were playing into a bigger role
They were going to sentence Jesus to die
But unknowingly they were sentencing Him to die for the sins of the world
it was part of the larger plan of God - they didn’t know it but it was
Jesus was going to pay a price for you and me
that we could not pay
one that he did not owe
He died for your sins -
he paid the price for your rebellion against God
He suffered so that you didn’t have to
The payment of my sins and your sins was upon Him and by His stripes we were healed
The bible said in
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 corint
What does that mean - Jesus took your place and my place and paid the penalty of our sinfulness.
He didn’t have to do it, but he did it so that we would become clean in God’s sight.
And how did we know that
Because HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD JUST LIKE HE SAID
That meant when He died,
he didn’t die for himself
he died for you, and he died for me.
That means he paid for our rebellion, our sin, our “whatever” attitude
So God raised Him up from that dead on the third day, just like he said.
Those people that killed him knew that something was going to happen.
That’s why they sealed the tomb,
that’s why they posted a Roman guard in front of the tomb.
Because he didn’t just tell his disciples he was going to rise,
the Pharisees and chief priests knew it too.
matt 27:62-66
Matthew 27:62–66 NKJV
On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise.’ Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.” Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone and setting the guard.
So you see, He told everybody listening that if He were to die, He was going to rise in three days.
That’s why they wanted to stop it.
did something that no one has been able to do
to this day
HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD, JUST LIKE HE SAID

The proof that Jesus is who He said He is, rests on fact of the resurrection

Because they knew if they could prove he didn’t rise from the dead,
that everything else He said could be brushed away.
If Jesus did not rise from the dead, our faith is in vain
We are wasting our time,
telling people a nice story about a man who said some nice things,
but was ultimately killed by the Romans and and sentenced to death by the Chief Religious leaders and Scribes who did not like him
If He simply died, we have believed a lie, we have been deceived
We are still in our sins - because his death alone did not prove anything,
It was his death as a substitute for us,
coupled with the FACT that He rose from the dead,
that gives His death significance!
He didn’t die for Himself,
by Himself,
to Himself,
He died for the sins of the world.
He was (as the scriptures say) the lamb of God
that taketh away the sin of the world.
Paul says it so eloquently in when he says...
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 NKJV
Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.
Paul says, if we only have hope in Christ in THIS LIFE,
If there is nothing beyond this life, we are MOST PITIABLE. We are pathetic. We are hopeless
But hallelujah, on the third day, He rose from the dead - just like he said
There was a group of religious people called the Sadducees that did not believe in the resurrection. They felt that once people died, that was it.
But Jesus said they were in error, because they did not know the scriptures or the power of God in

The First Resurrection Sunday

So now it’s SUNDAY - resurrection day and where are the disciples?
Are they waiting/looking with expectancy? For Jesus to rise triumphantly?
Are they
No, they are in hiding
from all the people.
Peter had told a crowd that he did not know who Jesus was,
during the trial and the rest of them just scattered
they were afraid that what happened to Jesus would happen to them
They were keeping a low profile
They were laying back in the cut
They were sad because their leader was dead
They didn’t know what to do
they were fearful
and they were behind closed doors
It was the women, Mary Magdalene, and others
that went to the grave on the third day
after the passover
But she, too, didn’t go there because she expected to see a risen Lord
She went there with spices to anoint his DEAD body
You see, when they buried Him they did a rush job
because they wanted to get him down from the cross before passover began
So they quickly took him down from the cross and buried Him in a borrowed tomb
give him a proper burial and not leave Him
but they didn’t give him a proper burial
up on the cross
So they were coming now on Sunday to properly anoint the body
it was the Jewish custom
They, too, were sad
They, too, were sorrowful
They did not come to the tomb with resurrection on their minds
They came to prepare His body to give it a proper burial
But then something AWESOME was about to happen
Let’s read about it
Matthew 28:1–10 NKJV
Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men. But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.” So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word. And as they went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, “Rejoice!” So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
MATT 28:1-10
Matthew 28:1–20 NKJV
Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me.” Now while they were going, behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all the things that had happened. When they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying, “Tell them, ‘His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will appease him and make you secure.” So they took the money and did as they were instructed; and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Matt 28:1-
This is the event that makes it all worth while
The earthquake happens and the angel is dispatched
not to open the grave so that Jesus could come out
HE WAS ALREADY OUT
His gloried body was not hampered by the stone covering the grave
The angel rolled away the stone to let people come in and see that he had RISEN FROM THE DEAD JUST LIKE HE SAID
Jesus was alive, He had risen from the dead, just like He said
And to prove it, He appears to Mary
and says “REJOICE”
Be happy
get excited
He was alive
It was if he said - See, I told you! I’m back!!
Get happy about it, REJOICE
Let the disciples know
I was dead but I am ALIVE!!!
I am ALIVE
*********************************************

Why would a group of fishermen and common folk choose to suffer martyrdom for a Christ that DID NOT rise from the dead?

Why would anyone make up this story?

Why would they make up this story?
It would make no sense for them to suffer and die for something that did not happen!
Why would these men who were scared to death of suffering the same fate as Jesus and were hiding from the crowd one moment,
be suddenly BOLD as lions,
standing ALL ELEVEN OF THEM before the people proclaiming that this same Jesus, “that you crucified” GOD raised Him from dead,
and WE ARE WITNESSES OF THIS?
What happened to these men to cause the turnaround?
What did the see that causes them to do an about face and now be BOLD as lions?
What caused these men who were cowering in fear one moment afraid to be recognized as a disciple (Peter),
to now preach in boldness - This is that that was prophesied by Joel, in the last days, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh
Acts 2:22–24 NKJV
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
Acts 2:22-24
What makes a man to change like that, except he had an encounter with the risen Lord!
And he has been given BOLDNESS to declare it, by the Holy Spirit which has just fallen upon them all in the upper room
Jesus rose from the dead JUST LIKE HE SAID

When did Jesus say he would rise from the dead?

But you say, when did he say that? I am so glad you asked. Turn with me to
Matthew 16:21 NKJV
From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
Matt 16:21
Matthew 16:21–23 NKJV
From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
matt 16
Mark 8:31 NKJV
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
mark 8:31
Luke 9:22 NKJV
saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.”
luk 9:22
Each of these scriptures are clear, Jesus was foretelling His own death, AND RESURRECTION
Before it happened
Just like He said it would
What’s interesting is that He is very clear who was doing the killing - the chiefs and the scribes. but that another topic for another day.
What is also clear is that He would be dead three days.
In fact, one scripture says, like Jonah in the belly of the fish, the son of man will be dead for 3 days and 3 nights.
Matthew 12:39–40 NKJV
But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
matt 12:39-40
First, it was because three days was what the SCRIPTURE said.
Paul takes great pains to say that Jesus died, according to the scriptures, and that He was buried and rose again the third day ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NKJV
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
I cor 15:3-4
He did all of this because He loves you - sir and mam
He died on the cross, shed His blood
to give you a direct connection to the Father
The bible says
John 3:16 NKJV
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
John 3
He died so that you could have eternal life
to know the only true God and Jesus who He sent
But after all He did for you
if you don’t receive it
if you don’t make this personal
it would all be for nought
John 1:12 NKJV
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
john 1
As many as received Him, received Jesus, to them the right to become children of God, to those who BELIEVE
Do you believe?
Do you believe in the Son of God
Do you accept his sacrifice that He made?
Do you accept Him as your personal Lord and Saviour?
ALTAR CALL
Let you bow your heads right now.
I spent a lot of time trying to show you that Jesus rose from the dead just like He said
that He suffered and died for you
and the reason He did that was because He loved you so much
that He did not want you to suffer an eternity without Him
The bible says, “For the joy that set before Him endured the cross”
What was the joy that was set before Him? You receiving Him as Saviour and Lord, You bowing your heart and saving Jesus, save me! I give my life to you! Come into my heart and be my saviour, be my Lord.
that was the joy set before Him
You receiving Him in your heart
You becoming born again
Won’t you accept Him know?
I am asking you to slip up your hand if you are saying
come into to my heart Lord Jesus
Clean me up
Wash me
I want to be saved
If that’s you, why don’t you slip up your hand right now
by doing that, you’re saying God I need you
thank you for dying in my place
I now choose to live for you
REPEAT THIS PRAYER AFTER ME
Lord Jesus
thank you for dying on the cross for me
thank you for taking my place
I admit I am a sinner in need of a saviour
I confess my sins to you
And I receive your forgiveness
Be my Lord, and Be my Saviour
From this day forward
You gave your life for me
Now I give you mine
In Jesus name, Amen
