Luke 6: 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” NIV

Luke 7:1 When Jesus had finished saying all this in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die. 3 The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4 When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5 because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.” 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. NIV

  • Obedience is about being under authority.

    • Obedience is not about you, unwillingly bending your will to someone stronger.
      • I bend my knee because you are stronger, richer,…so I have to.

      • V:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. * Digging down deep into our heart, our will and power of choice and placing them under the authority of God’s word. (God)

    • “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
      • Why do you call me Lord if you have not willingly placed yourself under my Lordship?
          • Why do you call me Boss and do not do what I say? * Why do you call me Pastor, Parent, President,…

Proverbs 6: 20 My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. 21 Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. 22 When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. 23 For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life, NIV

Ephesians 6: Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—(Deu. 5:16) which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” NIV

    • honor, show respect, give recognition, often implying action to show that honor (Mt 15:4; Jn 5:23); = Obey * That it may go well, that you may enjoy long life on earth.
      • Your family life is the training ground for obedience to God. If you do not teach your children to be under your authority willingly, then they will be lawless with man and God. Only doing what they are forced to do.

        • This means when you hear what I say, you do it. This is wisdom.

James 1: 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. NIV

        •   * The power for life flows from the stream of authority. Being under authority allows power to flow.
      • A Policeman under authority has the right to use a gun for the authorized purpose.
  • Obedience is the doorway to blessing

Deuteronomy 11: 26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse— 27 the blessing if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey the commands of the Lord your God

The choice is ours…

1 Peter 5: 5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. NIV

Prayer and choice: Humble our selves willingly under his authority and be outrageously blessed.
