We are broken people in need of a Savior.
Paul is warning his people to be aware and focus on the right things. If we focus on the wrong things the destination won’t be the same at the end of the line.
What do we focus on by default? Paul lists it here:
Selfish motives
Being conceited
While the list might not seem long, it packs a big punch.
Are we not to desire to climb the ladder with our company or position?
Should we not want to have our kids take a nap or go to another room so that we can have a little bit of peace and quiet?
Should I not ask for clothes for my birthday, because I might be better dressed than another person I come in contact with?
Should we not talk about ourselves during our conversations with others?
Should we be so focused on others that we neglect our physical, emotional and spiritual needs?
NO!
Paul is giving a warning not a checklist. Be aware of how you communicate to others. Make sure that your motives our pure.
When you take an honest look at your motives humility follows.
