The Book
Matthew was on the 12 apostles
Apostles orally taught their teachings about Jesus that they had memorized. The book of Matthew is a culmination of 30-40 years worth of oral traditions, pointing to Jesus the Messiah.
Matthew wants to prove 3 things:
Jesus is the Messiah
Jesus is the New Moses
Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us.
The Section

ow should a follower of Christ resist an evil person
Complements
Give more than what was asked of him/her by turning the other cheek, letting him/her have their cloak, going with him two miles, and not refusing the one who would borrow from them.
Those who identify the suffering servant with the nation of Israel suggest that the historical setting of this message reflects the suffering of the people of God in Babylonian exile and their deliverance from it.
Gary Smith, , vol. 15B, The New American Commentary (Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 2009), 430.
Exegetical Idea
Instead of resisting the evil person, a follower of Christ should give more than what was asked of him/her by turning the other cheek, letting him/her have their cloak, going with him two miles, and not refusing the one who would borrow from them.
Homiletical Idea
When someone does you wrong, do what’s right.
Repay evil with good.
Only by love is love awakened.
Only by love is love awakened.
Fighting fire with fire will get you burned.
Development
Application
Sermon Purpose
This coming week, when given the opportunity to seek revenge, the audience should do good in response to evil (i.e. pray for them, give them a gift, write them a nice letter, make food for them, offer them help, or even spend quality time with them).
