Introduction

Not just A day, but THE day (Lieutenant’s reminder)
Today we remember the day one of the greatest hopes and truths of the Christian faith: the resurrection
Matthew 28
Matthew 28:6 NLT
He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying.
Matthew 28:6 NTV
The truth of the resurrection is one that engages mind and heart

A mystery solved: Cold hard facts about the resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:1–8 NLT
Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters, of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it. It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place. I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said. He was seen by Peter and then by the Twelve. After that, he was seen by more than 500 of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James and later by all the apostles. Last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him.
1 Corinthians 15:1–8 NTV

How does it engage my heart?

Mark 15:29–32 NLT
The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!” The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him.
Mark 15:29–32 NTV
John 3:16–18 NLT
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. “There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.
John 3:16–18 NTV

Victory over guilt of sin

Romans 5:12 NLT
When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
Romans 5:12 NTV
Psalm 51:5 NLT
For I was born a sinner— yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
Psalm 51:5 NTV
Romans 3:20 NLT
For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.
Romans 3:20 NTV

But we have victory in Jesus

2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NTV
2 Corinthians 1:22 NLT
and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.
2 Corinthians 1:22 NTV
Ephesians 1:13 NLT
And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.
Ephesians 4:30 NLT
And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.
Ephesians 4:30 NTV
transition: But we have also have victory over the desire of sin
Romans 5

Victory over desire of sin

“If [the guilt] of sin speaks about what we are, [our desire of sin] speaks of who we are as revealed by how we think and what we do.”
Romans 7:18 NLT
And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.
Romans 7:18 NTV
Romans 7:24 NLT
Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?
Romans 7:24 NTV

But we have victory in Jesus

Philippians 2:12–13 NLT
Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
Philippians 2:12–13 NTV
“[The desire to] calls for a different kind of saving than from [the guilt of] sin.”
Romans 12:1 NLT
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.
Romans 12:1 NTV
John 17:15–17 NLT
I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. They do not belong to this world any more than I do. Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.
John 17:15–17 NTV
transition: But we have also have victory over the opposition of sin

Victory over the opposition of sin

“Scripture describes dynamic sin as a power that is external to us, seeking to defeat us.”
Romans 6:13–14 NLT
Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God. Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.
Romans 6:13–14 NTV
Romans 6:20–22 NLT
When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the obligation to do right. And what was the result? You are now ashamed of the things you used to do, things that end in eternal doom. But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.
Romans 6:20–22 NTV
Ephesians 6:10–13 NLT
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
Ephesians 6.
Ephesians 6:10–13 NTV

But we have victory in Jesus

1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians 15:24 NLT
After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power.
1 Corinthians 15:24 NTV
Hebrews 2:14 NLT
Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death.
Hebrews 2:14 NTV
1 Corinthians 6:14 NLT
And God will raise us from the dead by his power, just as he raised our Lord from the dead.
1 Corinthians 6:14 NTV
Ephesians 1:20–21 NLT
that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.
Ephesians 1:20–21 NTV
