A Dark Discovery

john 19:28-29

An Empty Tomb

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

John 20:2–3 ESV

So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.”
John 20

John 20:3–4 ESV
So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
Why would John point out that he outran Peter? Pride? No. John outran Peter, not because of his athletic ability, but his love for Jesus. Peter ran with all his strength. John ran with all his heart.
How do we run after Jesus?
The answer is dependent on the Jesus we are running after.
Who Is Your Jesus?
Jesus of Love or Jesus of Justice?
v
Is He faithful or fearful?
vIs He faithful or fearful?
Jesus of Justice
Is He still the baby or still on the cross?
vIs He still the baby or still on the cross?
Is He faithful or fearful?
Is He dead, or is He alive?
Is He still the baby? Maybe the Jesus on the Cross?
vIs He dead, or is He alive?
Is He dead, or is He alive?
John 20:5 ESV
And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
John 20:6–7 ESV
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
John
John 20:8 ESV
Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;
John 20:16 ESV
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
John 20:6–7 ESV
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.
John 20:6-7
John 20:
John 20:8–9 ESV
Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
John 20:10 ESV
Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Discovering Jesus

John 20:11 ESV
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.
Mary stands on the outside looking in, weeping. Her faith was small! Her hopes were crushed! But what if????
John 20:12 ESV
And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.
John 20:13 ESV
They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
John 20:14 ESV
Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.
John 20:15 ESV
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
John 20:16 ESV
Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).
It is finished - Not only was God’s redemptive work finished on the cross, but the journey to believing had reached it’s destination.
Here Jesus is the Good Shepherd calling his sheep by name
The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
He’s alive! He’s alive! He’s alive and I’m forgiven, heaven’s gates are open wide!

Discovering The King

John 20:17
John 20:17 ESV
Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
Jesus does not tell Mary not to cling to him ever, but not now, not yet.
Mary was clinging to the Jesus she knew, shrouded in humility, wrapped in flesh.
But after he ascends to the Father John writes:
Revelation 19:11–13 ESV
Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God.
Notice the declaration Jesus made: “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
