40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left.
41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left.
How do we answer these two verses if there is only one resurrection?
There are several reasons why the doctrine of several resurrections is found wanting...
a. The Bible presents the resurrection of believers and unbelievers as occurring together - Dan 12:2; Jn 5:28-29; Ac 24:14-15; Re 20:11-15
2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
14 But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets,
15 having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.
14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
b. The Bible teaches that believers will be raised at "the last day", not several times (and therefore several days, years, or millennium) before "the last day"! - Jn 6:39-40,44,54
Let’s look at the back drop first.
Seven woes to Pharisees and Sadducees… mt 23:1-36
Then a lament over Jerusalem...
You will have to open the door to
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
38 See, your house is left to you desolate.
39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ”
Then after the disciples have been listening to all this...
1 Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple.
2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Why do you think the Disciples asked this question to Jesus? The Disciples wanted to be prepared for the terrible events that Jesus was speaking of.
Jesus then begins to answer 3 questions...
English Standard Version Chapter 24
“Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
Mt 24:1-35 answer the first 2 questions which deal with the destruction of Jerusalem
Mt 24:36-51 answer the question about the end of the age which deals with the second coming of Christ
Everything up to verse 36 has a sign
15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
whereas the second coming does not have a sign Mt 24:36, 42, 44, 50
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know
(demonstrative pronoun) changes to - these/those days vs these/those things (plural)
19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!
22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.
34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark,
(demonstrative pronoun) changes to that/the day (singular)
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.
42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know
Then Jesus teaches about the wisdom and dangers of preparation...
Mt 24:36-44 deals with the dangers of no preparation
Mt 24:45-51 deals with the dangers of delayed preparation
Mt 25:1-13 deal with the dangers of partial preparation
Mt 25:14-30 deals with proper and improper preparation
Mt 25:31-41 deals with the results of ones preparation
verses 40 and 41 are not about different resurrections they are about preparation and not being prepared.
