Introduction:

Jeremiah 30:7 KJV 1900
Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: It is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; But he shall be saved out of it.
Be on guard; God WILL have the final say; FLEE FROM THE WRATH TO COME.
The chapter begins with “a great voice” and ends with “the great plague.” [Thomas M. Strouse, To the Seven Churches: A Commentary on the Apocalypse of Jesus Christ, Selected Works of Dr. Thomas M. Strouse (Bible Baptist Theological Press, 40 Country Squire Rd., Cromwell, CT 06461, 2013), 631.]

I. God Speaks (Rev. 16:1)

Revelation 16:1 KJV 1900
And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.
Note - John hears God instruct the Seven Angels to pour (Rev. 16:1)

A. Vial One (Rev. 16:2)

Revelation 16:2 KJV 1900
And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.
Note - Bad and Evil Sores Upon the Beast-Mark Bearers Who Worship His Image (Rev. 16:2)
Note - Noisome
NOISŎME, a. noi´sum. [Norm. noisife; It. nocivo, noioso. This word is formed with the Teutonic some, united with the It. noiare, Fr. nuire, nuisant, from the L. noxa, noceo, to hurt. Class Ng.]
1. Noxious to health; hurtful; mischievous; unwholesome; insalubrious; destructive; as noisome winds; noisome effluvia or miasmata; noisome pestilence. Milton. Dryden. [Noah Webster, Noah Webster’s First Edition of An American Dictionary of the English Language. (Anaheim, CA: Foundation for American Christian Education, 2006).]

B. Vial Two - (Rev. 16:3)

Revelation 16:3 KJV 1900
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
Note - Water Into Blood, Part One - Death in the Sea (Rev. 16:3)
Revelation 8:8 KJV 1900
And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
Exodus 7:20–25 KJV 1900
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the Lord commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. And the fish that was in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments: and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, neither did he hearken unto them; as the Lord had said. And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also. And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river. And seven days were fulfilled, after that the Lord had smitten the river.

C. Vial Three (Rev. 16:4)

Revelation 16:4 KJV 1900
And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.
Note - Water Into Blood Part Two - Rivers & Fountains (Rev. 16:4)
Revelation 8:10–11 KJV 1900
And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

II. Angels Speak (Rev. 16:5-7)

Note - The Lord God Almighty Is True & His Judgments Are Rightly Deserved Because of How His Saints & Prophets Were Slain By the Dragon & His Followers (Rev. 16:5-7)
Beast worshippers who have poured out believers’ blood will have the Seven Vial Judgments “poured out” upon them! The seven-fold “pouring out” pictures the Lord’s perfection in retribution. For instance, the Lord in His justice required the law of retaliation for the OT congregation, saying, “And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death. And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast. And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him; Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again. And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death” (Lev. 24:17-21; cf. also Gen. 9:5-6; Ex. 21:24; Dt. 19:21). [Strouse, 643–644.]

A. Vial Four (Rev. 16:8-9)

Revelation 16:8–9 KJV 1900
And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
Note - Men Burned By the Sun Blaspheme God in the Light & Remain Unrepentant (Rev. 16:8-9)
Malachi 4:1 KJV 1900
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; And all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: And the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, That it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
This is the first of three times the verb blasfhmew occurs in this chapter, confirming (vide Dt. 17:6; 19:15) the unrepentant nature of those with the mark of the Beast. The sin of blaspheming the name of the Lord was punishable by death, as the Jehovah instructed Moses, saying, “And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the LORD, shall be put to death” (Lev. 24:16).2488 [Strouse, 649.]
Job 1:11 KJV 1900
But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 2:5 KJV 1900
But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
Job 2:9 KJV 1900
Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

B. Vial Five (Rev. 16:10-11)

Revelation 16:10–11 KJV 1900
And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.
Note - Darkness on the Beast's Throne; Men Blaspheme God in the Darkness & Remain Unrepentant (Rev. 16:10-11)
Exodus 10:21–23 KJV 1900
And the Lord said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
Revelation 2:21 KJV 1900
And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.
Revelation 9:20–21 KJV 1900
And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
Revelation 16:9 KJV 1900
And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.
The divine judgment thus inflicted, apparently upon the entire earth, does not bring men to repentance but only increases their blasphemy, even though they recognize that the plague comes from the God whom they reject.... The Scriptures plainly refute the notion that wicked men will quickly repent when faced with catastrophic warnings of judgment. When confronted with the righteous judgment of God, their blasphemy is deepened and their evil purpose is accentuated. [John F. Walvoord, The Revelation of Jesus Christ (Galaxie Software, 2008), 234-5.]

C. Vial Six (Rev. 16:12)

Revelation 16:12 KJV 1900
And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
Note - The Euphrates Dried for the Gathering of Armageddon (Rev. 16:12)
Revelation 9:13–21 KJV 1900
And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates. And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them. And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone. By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

III. Demons Speaking Lies (Rev. 16:13-16)

Note - The Devil's Demons Propagandize through Deception but God Uses Their Own Devices to Gather them For Destruction (Rev. 16:13-16)

A. Three Unclean Spirits (Rev. 16:13-14)

Revelation 16:13–14 KJV 1900
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
Note - Three Frog-Demons Catch Their Prey with Their Tongues & Signs (Rev. 16:13-14)
Leviticus 11:10–11 KJV 1900
And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.
Leviticus 11:41 KJV 1900
And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.
1 Timothy 4:1–2 KJV 1900
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

B. Beatitude Parenthetical (Rev. 16:15)

Revelation 16:15 KJV 1900
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
Note - The Secret to Happiness: Watch for the Second Coming of the Lord & Don't Let the Devil Steal Your Clothes! (Rev. 16:15)
In Matthew 24:43 and Luke 12:39 the second coming of Christ is compared to the coming of a thief who will overtake those who do not watch. A similar warning is given to the church in Sardis (Rev. 3:3). In 2 Peter 3:10 and in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 4 the day of the Lord is said to come as a thief. The unifying factor in all these passages is that the coming in view results in loss for those who are not ready. [Walvoord, 238.]

1:2 A The man in charge of the Temple mount would go around to every watch, and lighted torches were [flaring] before him.
B And to any watch which was not standing did the man in charge of the Temple mount say, “Peace be with you.”
C [If] it was obvious that he was sleeping, he beats him with his staff.
D And he had the right to burn his garment.
E And they say, “What is the noise in the courtyard?”
F “It is the noise of a Levite being smitten, and his clothing being burned, for he went to sleep at his post.”
G R. Eliezer b. Jacob says, “One time they found my mother’s brother sleeping and burned his garment.” [Jacob Neusner, The Mishnah : A New Translation (New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1988), 873.]
The OT prophet Isaiah likened “garments” with salvation that belongs to the Lord’s bride, saying, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels” (Isa. 61:10; cf. also 59:17 ). [Strouse, 664.] (also Is. 52:1)

C. The Gathering of Armageddon (Rev. 16:16)

Revelation 16:16 KJV 1900
And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
Joel 3:9–21 KJV 1900
Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, Let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruninghooks into spears: Let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, And gather yourselves together round about: Thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O Lord. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: For there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: Come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; For their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, And the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, And utter his voice from Jerusalem; And the heavens and the earth shall shake: But the Lord will be the hope of his people, And the strength of the children of Israel. So shall ye know that I am the Lord your God Dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: Then shall Jerusalem be holy, And there shall no strangers pass through her any more. And it shall come to pass in that day, That the mountains shall drop down new wine, And the hills shall flow with milk, And all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, And a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, And shall water the valley of Shittim. Egypt shall be a desolation, And Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, For the violence against the children of Judah, Because they have shed innocent blood in their land. But Judah shall dwell for ever, And Jerusalem from generation to generation. For I will cleanse their blood that I have not cleansed: For the Lord dwelleth in Zion.
Daniel 11:36–45 KJV 1900
And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all. But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things. Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain. And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps. But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many. And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
1 Kings 22:19–23 KJV 1900
And he said, Hear thou therefore the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left. And the Lord said, Who shall persuade Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner. And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said, I will persuade him. And the Lord said unto him, Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, and do so. Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee.

And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

Revelation 16:21 KJV 1900
And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
Note - The Sky Rains Massive Hailstones Down Upon Mankind, Who Yet Blaspheme God Because of the Plague of Hail (Rev. 16:21)

Conclusion:

Chronologically the next event is that prophesied in 19:11 where Christ Himself descends from heaven to take over His kingdom on earth. [Walvoord, 241.]
