To this point in our study, we have learned several things about the Holy Spirit.

Which brings us to the final lesson and:
6. The Holy Spirit’s ministry today
A. He initiates and seals salvation (John 16:8-11; John 3:3-4; Titus 3:5-6; 1 Cor. 6:11; Romans 8:11)
The Holy Spirit initiates salvation and will bring it to completion
He convicts of sin, self-righteousness, faulty judgement
“Divine disturbance” or conviction
8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more;
11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Brings regeneration – new birth
Removes old nature – old script –
No longer in darkness, but in the light
Monergistic work (All of His - from start to finish)
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
He will give us the new resurrected bodies
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
B. His works related to assurance/perseverance
1.) The inner witness of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:16; 1 John 3:24; 4:13; Gal. 4:6)
16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
Subjective assurance – belonging forever
24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”
2.)The Sealing of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13; 4:30)
The guarantee mark that we will receive eternal life
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
3.) First fruits or down payment (Rom. 8:23; 2 Cor. 1:22; 5:5; Eph. 1:14)
23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
C. His sanctifying ministry
1.) Scripture associates the Holy Spirit as the entity of sanctification – He matures/transforms us (1 Peter 1:2; 2 Thess. 2:13)
2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
2.) The Holy Spirit produces Christ-likeness in our lives. (Gal. 5:22-23; 2 Cor. 3:18)
The fruit of the Spirit is not self produced!
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Paul further teaches in 2 Cor. 3:18 that sanctification is an ongoing reality. Metamorphosing us.
18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
D. other particular ministries of the Holy Spirit
1.) Prayer (Rom. 8:26-27; Eph. 2:18)
The HS helps us in our weaknesses – particularly in our prayers. We don’t know how to pray according to God’s will. Ignorance, confusion, poverty.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
The HS intercedes for us. Inexpressible in words – or in unspoken words
Because the Father knows the HS - Intercedes with perfect intensions
We can’t pray except the HS provides access to the Father for us. It is wrought by Jesus.
18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
2.) Illumination of the word of God (1 Cor. 2:12-15)
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15 But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
The natural man can’t understand the things of God and needs illumination by the Spirit of God.
HS inspired the authors and illuminates the readers.
Helps us understand it rightly
Spirit filled believers grasp what the HS reveals in His inspired word
We must learn and be sensitive to His leading - remembering that the Holy Spirit will never lead us away from God’s Word, but will always affirm it...
3.) Distribution of Spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12-14)
It is His will what gifts you have
We are to use them for the benefit of the church
There may be benefit for self, but that is never the primary reason we have it.
4.) Provides guidance (Rom. 8:4-6, 14; Gal. 5:16; Acts 16:6-15)
4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Paul here emphasizes that the law of the Spirit has set us free from the law of sin and death.
As we walk in the Spirit, we will fulfill His law.
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
In reality, Walking in the HS changes our desires…
Gives guidance
6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.
8 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.
9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
11 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis,
12 and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.
13 And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.
14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.
15 And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” So she persuaded us.
They travelled 400 miles before preaching the Gospel to Lydia…
Sense a prompting – Obey!
5.) Creates and sustains unity and fellowship among Christians (Eph. 4:30; 2 Cor. 13:14; Phil. 2:1-2; Rom. 15:30; Col. 1:8; Rom. 14:17; 1 Thess. 1:6)
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Don’t grieve the Holy Spirit, but rather work hard to maintain (keep)the Unity of the Spirit
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.
1 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy,
2 fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.
how is this possible?
– The HS gives us love for one another
30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me,
8 who also declared to us your love in the Spirit.
- the HS gives us joy
17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
6 And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit,
In Galatians 5 Paul is addressing 15 manifestations of the flesh (8 deal with disunity in the church)
6.) Empowerment for evangelism (Acts 1:8; 4:8; 5:27-32; Luke 12:11-12)
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
11 “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.
12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”
E. Avoid sinning against the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30; 1 Thess. 5:19)
– Paul says the HS is the seal – He is grieved when we disobey...
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
Don’t quenched – cold water on raging fire – specifically the HS gifting.
Don’t sin – obey
a.) be filled with the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18)
18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
This is an imperative present tense – keep on being filled/dominated/ controlled
and it’s in the passive voice – posture by yielding control – we don’t do anything – respond by yielding
b.) do everything in the Holy Spirit
Luke 10:21 – rejoice in the HS
Acts 19:21 - seek guidance from the HS
Romans 5:5 – Understand that God’s love is poured out into our hearts through the Spirit
Ephesians 2:18 - we have access to the Father through the HS
Ephesians 6:18; Jude 20 – Pray in the HS
Galatians 3:2-3 – We grow by the HS (sanctification) not by the law, legalism, behaviorism, moralism
1 Thessalonians 1:5; 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 – we evangelize in the HS – and ask Him to convict
Conclusion
A successful Christian life is not designed to be, nor can be, lived in one’s own strength or ability. It is not human power, wisdom, planning, or effort that pleases God, but a continual submission to Him. Be sensitive, be obedient and the Holy Spirit will fill you and guide you for God’s glory!
