The Lords Supper

17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.

18 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you.

And I believe it in part, 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s supper that you eat.

21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal.

One goes hungry, another gets drunk.

22 What!

Do you not have houses to eat and drink in?

Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing?

What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this?

No, I will not.

23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you.

Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.

28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.

What was Paul really saying in Verse 17?

In Corinth at this time they celebrated the Lords Supper by holding a “Love Feast” or fellowship meal.

The problem was that the rich would come with all of their food and would not share with the poor.

In Verse 22 we see Paul telling them that their gluttony and drunkenness are a disgrace to the Lord.

There are two things that we can take away from this.......Ultimately, If believers do not love one another, they can never partake of the Lords supper and be blessed and second If our hearts are not right, whatever should be a blessing becomes a curse.

(This could be used in many different areas of our lives, but here we are talking about it in the context of the Lords Supper.

says “For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body, eats and drinks judgement on himself”.

In Verse 24 it says “Do this” in remembrance of me.

Why?

This was a directive to continue the Lords Supper.

This was done as a memorial of Christ, and an effort to call to mind His sufferings as well as His person.

As we approach the Lords table, we are told to do this in worship, with remembrance and examination.

For me, this was convicting.

I am and have been guilty of taking the Lords Supper without thinking of the sin in my life, or remembering the torment that Christ faced on the Cross for ME.

Why would we want to bring to mind his sufferings?

This was a way for us to remember the sacrifice that Christ performed for us on the cross.

The Lords Supper marked the beginning of salvation and looks ahead to His return.

Thought:Is it ironic that a feast which brings such encouragement and consolation to Christians would have been instituted on a night when maliciousness reached its peak in the betrayal of our Savior.

On page 60, your book ask this question.

“How can the Lords Supper be a means of sharing the gospel with others?

How can observing the Lords supper give a believer confidence in his or her own salvation?”

When we partake of the Lords Supper we are ultimately remembering His death on the Cross.

Through the Blood and his Body we are saved.

The Lords supper is a time for Unity in the Body.

No matter what status we may hold, when we observe the Lords Supper, we are all on an equal playing field.

None of us could do anything on our own without the death of Christ on the cross.
