Luke 1: 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.” 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.

  • Greetings, you who are highly favored!
    • I’ve got good news for you…
    • Normally people don’t get troubled and afraid when someone comes and say this.
      • Mary was greatly
        • Troubled at his words.
        • Afraid

Why? Because of what he said!

    • You will be with Child (I am a virgin)
    • He will be a boy (How do you determine the sex before pregnancy)
    • His name will be Jesus ( Not normal to do this) Luke 1:61 objection that he was named after someone in the family)
    • He will be great and be called son of the most high (Blasphemy)
    • God will give him the throne of David (The highest ruler)
    • He will rule forever (Just plain impossible)

HER QUESTION

  • How will this be? Good question!
  1. The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you
    • Miracles are birthed by the Holy Spirit
    • What God starts he will take care of, lead and finish.
      • Yes but…Did he start it by the Holy Spirit?
  2. Many times God will be doing the same things in other places
    • It can give you security so that you can confirm that it is God.
  3. Nothing is impossible with God
    •  Nothing! WITH GOD! The Lord is with you!

HER ANSWER

  • I am the Lord’s servant,” ……. answered. “May it be to me as you have said.”
    • I am the Lord’s servant
      • Are we? Really?
      • What do servants do? Everything the Master says.
        • I came into the Masters house and now I am angry at him because he doesn’t serve me! Ha!
      • Say it! I am the Lord’ servant!
      • Humble yourself – death to pride

    • May it be to me, as you have said!
      • Whatever you say, that is the way it will be.

1 Peter 5: 5b …..“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

      • This is the position of his miracles.
        • Humble yourself, for your miracle. God won’t do it. Humble yourself that he may lift you up*.

Why did God choose Mary for the most important position of any Human being till and since?  And why would he ever choose us for something great? The same reasons he chose Mary, because she was:

  • Receptive * Humble
  • Servant

Mary didn’t forget either. When they needed a miracle at the wedding look what she did. John 2: 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Let’s learn from God and Mary this Christmas season. Humble yourself and receive the Savior. Humble yourself and receive new life. Humble yourself and receive your miracle.
