A New Life: Renewing your mind
A New Life: Renewing your mind
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Renewing our minds
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 58.72 ἀνακαίνωσις, εως; ἀνακαινόω; ἀνανεόω
to cause something to become new and different, with the implication of becoming superior
We are a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
The new is far superior then the old
it is renewed, redeemed, and restored life
it isn’t like the life we lived before Christ
We take off the old and put on the new life
the old:
was death
in thinking
in believing
nd in action
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!
We were like fish just following everyone else to death
we were described as
depressed
full of anxiety
sad
angry
broken
hurt
So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, God’s wrath is coming upon the disobedient, and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator. In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
We have put off the old self
with all its corruption and death
And we have put on a new life be transformed into something greater
in this new life we
rely on Christ
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
we continue to rely on God’s words
we continue to go to God through
prayer
the word
We have a source of life that is constantly changing us as we continue to submit to God
We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory; this is from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Christ is making us into His image
Transformed
Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 13.53 μεταμορφόομαι
to change the essential form or nature of something—‘to become, to change, to be changed into,
God is at work in your life
Because of this we no longer just bow to the old but we are empowered by Go to grow
We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
WE have God’s grace at Salvation and God’s grace of Sanctification:
God making us more like Him
in love
in action
into what He has for us
Romans 12:1 “ by the mercies of God,”
God grace is still active in our lives transforming us
Shaping us
working in us
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Every-time we come to His word our prayer should be “God continue to make me like you! Let your word guide, and guard my heart. Help me to understand what you are doing in my life and to trust you even in the hard times.”
it is by God mercies we are transformed and renewed
God doesn't’ need us
We don’t add anything to Him if we believe in Him, and we don’t take anything away from Him if we don’t believe in Him
But Because He is a God of Love and mercy He sent His son to the cross so that we could be made new
and because of His Grace He continue to work in our lives even though we fall and fail
Eph 2:1-4 says we were ll dead in our sins
And goes on to say,
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Just as we are depending on God for salvation
we need to continue to Depend on God to work in our life to make us who he has for us
we need to continue to renew our minds in His word
we need to allow God spirit to guides us
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
We Come to God saying Guide us in your ways
make us more like you
it takes living as a sacrifice
Jesus Prayed “not my will but yours be done.”
in our life “not my will but your be done”
