Work day next week - great way to get to know others
REALLY get to know someone when they smash their finger with a hammer
Growth Track
Josh did a great job last week - testimony of people who were here
ALL the volunteers
Today’s Lesson
Today’s Lesson
Josh talked last week about what the disciples - those who walked with Jesus - thought about after he left. What strengthened them and helped them get through.
Want to follow up with a series I’m calling the “Legacy of Christ”. I’ll explain in a minute. But here’s our foundation scripture. You can find it in your sermon notes:
For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.
In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.
New covenant - more than just salvation
Last days ministry - very clearly left/imparted things to them:
Last supper - John 13 - 16
What they would be facing in coming days
his death
turmoil
unbelief
uncertainty about future
“I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit —the Father will send Him in My name—will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.
Teach - get them into you
Remind - situations will bring it to mind
Then he said this:
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.
As the World Gives
As the World Gives
Things are coming your way that you can’t even fully understand right now.
I don’t give to you as the world does.
Discourse in 13 - 16 covers it all:
Grief
Grief
Loss of loved one
Betrayal
Betrayal
by a close one
people leaving the church
affairs in relationships
Abandonment
Abandonment
by friends
face death all alone?
Jealousy and hate
Jealousy and hate
for what you have
and for what you will receive
for what you stand for
And in the Middle of all of that, he said:
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Your heart must not be troubled or fearful.
Peace I leave
Peace I leave
One of the meanings of “leave” in the Greek is to “release someone from a legal obligation”
from the world’s bindings
from the legal obligation to keep the law - step by step - just love me and the Father and it will come naturally
Rules and regulations give you no solace, no comfort, no assurance
I’m leaving, but if you allow him to, the Holy Spirit will bring to your mind the things I have taught you - the parables, the principles, the way I lived my life here on this earth
In those teachings is peace in the middle of the storm
Remember walking on the storm tossed waves?
Remember I stilled the storm
Remember, I raised our friend to life
Remember, I fed the thousands
Remember I said I would be with you always - grief
There is peace in these teachings and I am leaving them with you
If you remember and apply these things, you will have peace.
Not peace with others necessarily, but a state of peace
Knowing all is well
All will be ok
Everything will work out
God has a plan - and I’m in it
I leave you the KEYS to peace
Then he said:
MY peace I give to you
MY peace I give to you
He knew what was coming
Sitting talking calmly - still teaching
Still loving
Still caring
When everything seems to be falling in around us, I can still love, I can still care, I can still pay attention to what is important - those that I love
When life takes and unexpected turn . . . (Brody)
Its THIS peace that I am giving to you
Where does it come from? Where can you find it?
It comes from the things I know - and you now know as well:
I know where I’m going
I know where I’m going
“But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’
There is unbelievable peace in knowing where you’re going
And where your loved ones are going
MY peace is here because:
I know I’m never alone
I know I’m never alone
Look: An hour is coming, and has come, when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
God is ALWAYS with us - in the darkest times, he longs to comfort you
I’m not alone - and you won’t be either
I know that my Father loves me
I know that my Father loves me
“I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done—kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love.
Commands - go the way I’m leading you
Follow my directions
I know that my Father is cultivating me to make me more bountiful
I know that my Father is cultivating me to make me more bountiful
“I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing he prunes back so it will bear even more.
Even in the toughest situations, I know that God is working on me to make me even better
To teach me
To grow me
I know I have the power to win this battle
I know I have the power to win this battle
Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
