Matt 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Matt 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."" (NIV)

Mark 16:15 He said to them, "Go into the entire world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it (nothing) will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." 19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it. (NIV)

Acts 19:1-6 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." 3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. 4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. (NIV)

What is this Baptism today?

The baptism of John or Jesus?

  • Is this repentance from sin or a baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire?
    • John always baptized the same way.  I baptize with water for repentance, after me…Holy spirit and fire.
      • Holy Spirit we have seen examples of in these scriptures, power gifts, gifts of the spirit. Casting out demons, protection, healing gifts, tongues, prophecy, etc.
      • Fire! Obedience, work, loving others first,
        • Luke 12:49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

    • Both were done in the water.

Rom 6:3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

  • This is the final death of sin. By dying with Christ we also are buried with him and resurrected with him to a new life. I’m free no one controls me, I can do what I want… Wait a minute

1 Cor 12:13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free-- and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

  • The Bible warns us:
    • Gal 5:13 You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.
