What to do when you don’t know what to do
Mark 10: 46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (that is, the Son of Timaeus), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” 52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road. NIV
- A blind man Bartimaeus was sitting by the roadside begging
- What a hopeless situation
- It could be physical like this man, a disability of some sort
- It could be some thing in your soul, a major hurt, rejection, divorce, etc…
- It could be social like prejudice…
- There are many reasons that we could find ourselves sitting on the roadside of life taking what people handout to us. Not expecting anymore from life than a beggar.
- Maybe we are not financially poor; maybe we are poor in our souls. Maybe we have ceased to dream our dreams, live our lives, hope and expect anything more from this life.
- But Bartemaeus “Everything can change in a moment!”
1. Shout till he hears/stops
- “Jesus, Son of David, “have mercy on me!”
- NOT Hey you! Not, you owe me. But have mercy on me. Don’t give me what I deserve.
- If God is so good…he would stop and heal me! I am going to sit right here and if God wants something from me then…
- Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet
- Can you imagine this?
- Why would they do this?
- Do we think certain people are more worthy to come to Jesus than others?
- But he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
- Persistence, not being persuaded by others to stop pursuing God.
- V:49 Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him.
2. Sit till he calls
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
- Don’t move before he calls; don’t run around in panic or empty activity.
- Can you imagine the disciples saying “We called him master, but he was gone.
- God said to Moses “Be still and know I am God!”
- Order food in a restaurant and then leave? Crazy…
3. Know what you want when he asks
- When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41 “What do you want me to do for you?”
- “Lord, I want to see,” he replied.
- What would you say?
- What is your greatest need? Do you know?
- James said “ you have not because you ask not”
James 4: 2 You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. NIV
- What if he would have asked for something else?
- Jesus is looking for the cry of faith, the cry of your heart!
- When you don’t know what to do – find out what you want from the Lord, he may ask you what you want.
- What do you want to do; I don’t know what do you want to do?
- 42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”
4. Follow him when he is finished
o Many forget quickly when God does something for them. Follow him!
o Stay faithful to the savior of your souls.
