Part 1

Luke 5: 1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2 he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” 5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.” 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. NIV

  • Will you offer the Lord your empty, fishless boat?
    • What a sad picture. They were washing their nets after long night of fruitless labor. Just doing the daily things, frustrated, empty handed.
    • But will you give this to the Lord?

  • “Put out into deep water
    • Going deeper with God!
    • Don’t stay here on shore, don’t stay in the shallow water, go out into the deep.

  • Let down the nets for a catch.”
    • Drop your nets (what do the nets represent? Hope!) Come back to prayer, the word, Come back to Church, prayer meetings….
    • For a catch.
  • “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.
    • Hopelessness because of empty hands
    • Against common sense
      • Fish don’t go into a net they can see.

    • But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
      • Because you say so…
      • Continuing as his disciples, obeying the word and staying in prayer.
        • But we have done that and…nothing!
        • But because you say so, I will do it again and again…

Part 2 (hook up with Grassland Church)

NIV

  • When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.
    • As we make what we have available to the Lord (our boat, our church, our lives, our wallets) * Obey him, even when it doesn’t make sense to us. (I tried and it didn’t work)
    •
  • So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
    • We haven’t filled our boat and yours isn’t full yet either, but…
      • We can make what we have available to the Lord.
      • Obey him even when it doesn’t make sense to us. Go out into deep water.
      • And last have partners ready to help…
        • So that when it does happen, both boats would be filled, the nets would be so full that they were breaking…

Philippians 1: 3 I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. NIV

  • because of your partnership in the gospel

Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
