Psalm 4:1 ESV

1 Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!

Have you ever called out to someone and you felt they where ignoring you so you called out in frustration and said Answer me when I call.

I will admit I have done this with my children. I will call them and call them and call them and then they don’t answer and I have actually said. Answer me when i call.

However David is not talking to his child or even to another human being.

David is calling out the God of his righteousness.

He then tells God that he had given him relief when he was in distress.

This is referring back to when David is surrounded by the enemy, His son who wants him dead. His son is the one who said that God would not answer David or save him.

David here says that God gave him relief.

Then David ask God to be gracious to him and hear his prayer.

The last time we looked at this verse I gave you 15 ways in which God does not hear your prayer.

I will not cover that again tonight. However, I will say that we take for granted that God will hear us but that is not always the case. Sometimes God turns a deaf ear to us.

Psalm 4:2 ESV

2 O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah

David here is referring to Absolom and his men who are spreading lies about David.

David sings about how they have ruined his reputation. How they have spread false things about him.

Then David writes Selah. Which means to pause in reflect

He wants to pause and reflect how the enemy thought God would not come to his rescue and then God delieverd him yet the enemy still wants to tarnish his reputation by spreading lies

Psalm 4:3 ESV

3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.

After the pause and reflection David then points to the fact that the Lord is the one who has set the godly apart for himself. and that the Lord Hears the godly prayer.
