010 proofs of being Justified by faith 15-22
010 proofs of being Justified by faith 15-22
I. vv. 15-18 Proof of Justification by faith is God’s Promise
A. v. 15 Starts by giving a ILL. If man made a covenant no man can dislove it or take it away.
1. The point is God’s covenant stands
B. v. 16 The promises were made to Abraham and his seed the Lord Jesus
The word seed is singular not plural-the seed is the Lord Jesus, He is heir of all that God had promised Abraham
It is through our faith in the Lord Jesus the we inherient the promises made to Abraham, not through being a Jew or keeping the law
C. v 17 We are justified by faith alone, because God gave His covenant before He gave the law.
The law of God did not appear until 430 years after the promise.
The promise had not yet been fulfilled so the law could not void it or change it.
after the promise.
2. The covenant made with Abraham told man how he was to follow God and receive the promises of God, that is, by faith. Therefore, when the law was given, it must have been given for a different purpose entirely. It could not have been given to show men how to follow God, for that truth was already established in the covenant of faith given to Abraham.
D. v.18 How do we know that a person is justified by faith alone? Because God gave His covenant or inheritance by promise, not by law.
How do we know that a person is justified by faith alone? Because God gave His covenant or inheritance by promise, not by law.
If justification were of the law then we would have to earn our way to heaven, but then God would be breaking His promise with Abraham
II. vv. 3:19–22 Proof of Justification by Faith: The Law’s Powerlessness
E. v. 19
A. v. 19-20 three points
Proof of Justification by Faith: The Law’s Powerlessness, 3:19–22
1. v. 19 The law was given because of transgressions
a. ILL. …Pastor said all the rules were made because of me
b. Laws were given to make us aware of our sin
2. It was only temporary when Christ Came he did away with the keeping the law.
3. vv. 19c-20 the law was not given directly by God, but through a mediator; therefore, it is inferior. Two arguments show this.
a. The law was not given directly by God. The law came from God, but it was given by angels to Moses and then to man
the law was not given directly by God, but through a mediator; therefore, it is inferior. Two arguments show this.
And he said, The Lord came from Sinai, And rose up from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, And he came with ten thousands of saints: From his right hand went a fiery law for them.
The law was not given directly by God. The law came from God, but it was given by angels to Moses and then to man
The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: The Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
Ac. 7:
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
Ac. 7:56
For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward;
Heb.
Acts 7.
Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
a. Moses received the law second hand, Abraham recieved the promise direct from God.
b. The gift of righteousness was conditional under the law. Man had to keep the law.
c. However the promise was given by God, and He could not break that promise, man just had to believe.
B. v. 21 The law has no power to give life
1. The law is just mere rules to follow, it is external action, is does not change the heart. ILL. Addiction programs, churches that teach salvation by works.
C. v. 22 How do we know that the law does not justify or make a person acceptable to God? Because the law declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin.
How do we know that the law does not justify or make a person acceptable to God? Because the law declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin.
The scripture Paul is referring to is the law
scripture declares that we are under sin, under it’s control.
3. The great purpose of the law is stated again: to drive men to seek the promise of Jesus Christ, that is, righteousness by faith.
Question:
A. The law is our Schoolmaster
Is the law good for people today?
The moral law yes, the cermonial law no
For righteous of man no,
in living a righteous life yes
This gives us rules to live by, a guideline to know what if what we are doing is sin or not.
Who is the only One who has ever kept the law perfectly
Lord Jesus, should we not follow His example.
we were kept under the law
