Privilege of prayer. Touch. Holy Spirit come.
John 13:21–38 ESV
21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. 31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” 36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
Betrayal, Glory, Love, Denial
From betrayal to denial; LOVE
One of you will betray me. In that conversation, not everyone knew what was going on. Jesus knew all that was going on. Judas knew what he had agreed to do. Satan knew what he was allowed to do. The disciples were in the dark. Portrayal of Judas in ‘Passion of the Christ’...
Glorify
v. 32 the folding together of Jesus, as representative of God, and God Himself in the glorification process. It gives us the idea that there are two distinct things happening here. Lifted up to rightful ‘glory’ place. Changed into another state.
It would be like a peasant or slave, plucked out of their circumstances and given a royal robe. A place at the king’s table.
Glorification - to be lifted to a place of honor; to be made different, transformed
2 Corinthians 3:18 ESV
18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:17–18 ESV
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
Philippians
Philippians 3:20–21 ESV
20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Where I am going, you cannot come. Was Jesus giving them instruction? Was He telling them not to go with Him? He will tell them not to fight when in the garden. He did want them to pray: Can you not pray with me for one hour?!? Would Peter have betrayed Jesus had he stayed and prayed?
I dont know. It was true that they couldnt go through the grave yet like He was about to. Sometimes scripture gives us questions and it is good for us to wrestle with them. The Holy Spirit is faithful…
Love - I find it remarkable that Jesus’ command to love one another was absolutely skipped over in that moment. Peter immediately keyed in on where Jesus was going. As was typical of Peter...
A fresh new way to relate: love each other. Now He’s telling this to a group of people that were continuously competitive. They often argued about who would be the greatest. Even who would get to sit on either side of Jesus in the Kingdom.
So HOW were they supposed to love one another?!?!?! If we can see how they managed to love each other, maybe we can gain insight as to how we can love one another as well.
Matthew 18:1–5 ESV
1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them 3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

Philippians 2:1–8 ESV
1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
What we see from these texts is: If I’m going to love you, if we are going to love each other, we humbly serve. Count others as more significant than myself.
We always have a choice as to how we will deal with that. We can look at someone else, what they say, how they act and declare: You’re not being very loving. You are supposed to consider me more than yourself. You need to grow up. OR we can actually imitate Christ. Loving, serving, ministering… Remembering that the value of humbly serving one another is not in the outcome, but in the obedience.
Here’s what I want you to do with that this week: Keep a record of the opportunities you have to serve someone. To put their needs above your own. Keep a record of the opportunities whether you act on them or not. If we open our eyes to them, we may be surprised at how often God brings them across our path.
These are the kind of things that need to move to the forefront of our minds. If it was important enough for Jesus to instruct/command the disciples on the night before His crucifixion, its important enough for us to consider in this life.
