The Power that Resurrect Jesus From The Dead

Synopsis

In contrast to human strength, God is the source and supplier of all spiritual strength through which believers can do all that God asks.

God gives strength

(ESV) — 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.

(ESV) — 3 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts, and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron.

(ESV) — 6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me where your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you.”

(ESV) — 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, “Come up again, for he has told me all his heart.”

Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hands.

19 She made him sleep on her knees.

And she called a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head.

Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.

20 And she said, “The Philistines are upon you, Samson!”

And he awoke from his sleep and said, “I will go out as at other times and shake myself free.”

But he did not know that the Lord had left him.

(ESV) — 35 Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people.

Blessed be God!

(ESV) — 29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.

30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; 31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

(ESV) — 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.

But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

(ESV) — 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

(ESV) — 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,

(ESV) — 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,

(ESV) — 16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, 17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

(ESV) — 12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,

(ESV) — 7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Strength comes from the promise of his presence

(ESV) — 9 Have I not commanded you?

Be strong and courageous.

Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

(ESV) — 7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it.

8 It is the Lord who goes before you.

He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you.

Do not fear or be dismayed.”

(ESV) — 28 My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!

(ESV) — 10 fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

(ESV) — 4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord.

Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest.

Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts,

(ESV) — 17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it.

So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

Strength comes from the realisation of his grace

(ESV) — 1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,

(ESV) — 32 And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.

(ESV) — 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain.

On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.

(ESV) — 9 Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them.

Strength comes through the Holy Spirit

(ESV) — 6 Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.

7 Who are you, O great mountain?

Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain.

And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’

(ESV) — 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat.

But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

Overcoming strength is often veiled in weakness

(ESV) — 7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.

For when I am weak, then I am strong.

For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

35 Women received back their dead by resurrection.

Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.

36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment.

37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword.

They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— 38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

Profound dependence upon God

(ESV) — 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

6 For not in my bow do I trust, nor can my sword save me.

7 But you have saved us from our foes and have put to shame those who hate us.

8 In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.
