Introduction
Jesus is approached by a man with leprosy who had the faith Jesus would not reject him and if Jesus was willing had the power and authority to heal him. Jesus reaches out and touches the man (which was against the mosaic law in ) but Jesus made the man clean therefore making the entire occasion clean. Only God can do this. leprosy was always a symbol of sin in OT Jesus entering into humanity to become a man to die for man. God’s justice demanded a man to die for sin, no angel could pay for the sins it had to be a man. Therefore Jesus is man, but is able to take sin upon him self and make us clean- thats what we see here. Now we move on to Mark Chapter 2
Jesus preaching the word in Capernaum
Jesus preaching the word in Capernaum
He returned home oikos which means house hold or house. This is most likely referring to Peter and Andrew’s house. They were gathered together in the home a crowd of people where there was no room at all as he talk the word to them. The gospel of the kingdom of God.
The come bringing a paralytic carried by four men. They removed the roof, in those days
This house like many in first-century Palestine evidently had an outside staircase leading to a flat roof made of branches and sod. To make an opening in such a roof was not difficult.
Jesus saw their faith
Jesus saw their faith
These men demonstrated their faith by action. They knew through faith Jesus could heal them so they did what ever it took to get the man before Jesus
Mark writes down many occasions where Jesus shows the significance of faith
And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
Mark 10:
And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.
Jesus responds with a term of endearment.
Son your sins are forgiven
this is a phase that has never been uttered by another man before
The teachers of the law (scribes) were very taken back by this, they questioning in their hearts why does this man speak like this? Who is this person?? Only God can forgive sin
They concluded he must be Blaspheming- this was punishable by death-Lev 24:16
This is the same charge that will be used to condem Jesus to death.
4. Jesus immediately perceived in his spirit (not the holy spirit but his spirit) what was going on with the scribes. He point blank asks them “why do you question these things in your hearts? Any person with insight could have surmised the thoughts of the scribes on this occasion.
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’?
V
The scribes would of thought well its a lot easier to say “your sins are forgiven” any crazy fool can say that. The pronouncement could not be verified!
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”
Mark
Jesus heals the man
Jesus heals the man
Jesus calls himself the “son of man” Jesus had already performed miracles. When the paralytic is put before him, he could of healed him and everyone would have been amazed. Instead he “says Son your sins are forgiven” Jesus was making a statement to reveal who he was. He says in vs 10 “that you may know the son of man has authority to forgive sins”
Jesus calls him self
SON OF MAN— it is here the first out of fourteen times Mark wrote the term “son of man” in the gospels Jesus always uses this as a self designation. In the OT the majority of the time it means simply a man or human being There is a exception to the OT usage and we find this in
And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.
this refers to a transcendent being
In the apocryphal book of 1 Enoch
And there I saw One who had a head of days,
And His head was white like wool,
And with Him was another being whose countenance had the appearance of a man,
And his face was full of graciousness, like one of the holy angels.
2 And I asked the angel who went with me and showed me all the hidden things, concerning that Son of Man, who he was, and whence he was, (and) why he went with the Head of Days? 3 And he answered and said unto me:
This is the Son of Man who hath righteousness,
With whom dwelleth righteousness,
And who revealeth all the treasures of that which is hidden,
Because the Lord of Spirits hath chosen him,
And whose lot hath the pre-eminence before the Lord of Spirits in uprightness for ever.
This for sure is referring to a Supernatural being
The question arises, why did Jesus choose this term as his favorite self-designation?
This could mean simply an ordinary human being or a supernatural being
Overtones of both humanity and deity--
by using this self designation, this term son of man Jesus forced the person to make up their own mind as to what kind of person he was! Was he a man or was He THE MAN! ?
This avoided the political problems of just coming out publicly calling himself the messiah
His ministry made the evidence plain, he in fact was in fact a man, but also deity for only God could perform the miracles he was doing, demonstrating he has the divine reserved right to forgive the sins of man. For he would be the one to take upon himself the sins of his people paying the price of justice for their forgiveness
“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.”
“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
Mark
Application
Application
Jesus just showed everyone who he was by what he said and what he did. He said he would prove he has authority to forgive sin, but performing an impossible healing of a paralytic man.
Jesus wants people to understand who he is- have you made up in your’e mind who Jesus is?
Do you understand Jesus is more concerned with our spiritual health than he is our physical? It does no good to heal a man who is paralyzed and then he perish in hell.
When you tell people about what Jesus has done in your life do you start with the miracles?
or do you start with the fact “your sins are forgiven and he calls you child” a term of endearment?
4. Do you understand the greatest fact for humanity and the most amazing thing to catapult your faith is to meditate on the fact, your sin though red like crimson has been made whiter than son, but his death on the cross and his resurrection.
5. We all have problems, aliments but it does no good for us to be healed of those if your sins aren’t forgiven first. Jesus isn’t a gene in a bottle but the Alpha and omega----- The only one who can take away your sins!!
Some of us need to draw near to the throne of grace, be willing to carry our friends, family co workers, and ourselves by any means possible and present ourselves before Jesus. He will never reject those who come.
BUT we must come as we are.
Meditate today of the SON of MAN— WHO IS HE this one who can forgive your sins and heal your disease
LETS pray
