Review

The Exodus parallels the Christian’s journey from bondage to freedom.
When we choose to follow God, Satan fights harder to keep us enslaved.
God destroys our idols to teach us how to trust in Him.
The Passover represents the lengths God will go to set us free!

Into the Wilderness

Exodus 13-18
God’s people had to go through the wilderness on the way.
They needed to learn to hear, trust, obey, and follow God in the desert.
Have you learned that?
They learned that no barrier can stop God; God can part the waters.
Have you learned that? - Red Sea (Ex 14)
They learned that God is always present; He will protect and lead us.
Have you learned that? - pillar of cloud and fire
They learned that God meets all our needs (and sometimes our desires).
Have you learned that? - manna and quail (Ex 16), water from rock (Ex 17)
They learned that God must be in charge of winning our battles.
Amalakites (Ex 17) - Complete DEPENDENCE ON GOD!

Life on the Outside

Exodus 20 (21-23)
Story about recidivism and living on the outside.
God’s rules were not new at Sinai; they are eternal laws of God’s kingdom.
After living in slavery, God’s people needed a new moral compass.
Obedience to God’s rules is a response to His grace and authority.
Exodus 20:1–2 ESV
And God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
The 10 Commandments encompass our duty to God and others.
1-4 Us and God
5-10 Us and each other
God’s other laws are practical applications for everyday life.
disease, sanitation, good food, agriculture, safety, holiness, right/wrong.

A Change of Heart

Matthew 22:34–40 ESV
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
(Matthew 5-7)
As children grow, they need to understand the reasoning behind the rules.
Black and white - rules for children
We hope they will become people of principle instead of unthinking robots.
God was leading his people into a new life based on the principle of love.
How would I act differently if I were motivated by love?
