The question of who Jesus is / was is like most questions. Ask a 100 people and you’ll likely get at least 5 or 10 different answers depending on the background of those being asked. This isn’t a new phenomenon Jesus asked His disciples “Who do people say that I am?” He got some interesting answers, evidently people thought He was reincarnated
John the Baptist,
some Elijah,
and others Jeremiah
or one of the prophets.
What would be some of the answers you might receive today?
Barna -
The Vast Majority of Americans Believe Jesus Was a Real Person
Younger Generations Are Increasingly Less Likely to Believe Jesus Was God
Americans Are Divided on Whether Jesus Was Sinless
Most Americans Say They Have Made a Commitment to Jesus Christ
People Are Conflicted between “Jesus” and “Good Deeds” as the Way to Heaven
The importance of this question is re-inforced by the fact that Jesus himself asked this question of His disciples. In fact when Peter responded correctly Jesus then declares that the church would be established on the truth of Peter’s answer.
Matthew 16:13–17 NKJV
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.

There are many scriptural witnesses to His Sonship

Why does it matter who you believe Jesus is?

Mankind cannot redeem mankind

Psalm 49:6-9
Psalm 49:6–9 NKJV
Those who trust in their wealth And boast in the multitude of their riches, None of them can by any means redeem his brother, Nor give to God a ransom for him— For the redemption of their souls is costly, And it shall cease forever— That he should continue to live eternally, And not see the Pit.
Our life can only pay the debt we owe, there is no remaining capital to pay anyone else debt. All men are born with a sin nature
Jesus was not of Adam's seed
His virgin birth means He was born without original sin
Heb 2:17-18
Hebrews 2:17–18 NKJV
Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.
He had to be given opportunity and resist
His Godhood fit Him to be a redeemer
His manhood gave Him blood to shed as the necessary sacrifice for sin
