And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Walk in Love (v. 1-2)
The first way we imitate Christ is by walking in love.
How do Christians walk in love?
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven ()
We are loved children in verse 1, and verse 2 gives an example of how we are loved children.
Moreover, it gives an example for how to love like God. How did God love us?
Christ is our example and the example is that he died for you!
our ideal is to be that loving to others, even our enemies!
Christian give themselves in the service of other in love.
We tend to think that love is only this mushy feeling, but its more. What is it?
It involves personal sacrifice, giving up your own comforts, and wellbeing for the sake of others.
Story of my Mechanic
Our actions and attitude matter.
Going through the motions get you nowhere
My mechanic, if helped but grumbled.
But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.
Walk in Purity (v. 3-7)
The second way we imitate Christ is by walking in purity.
How are Christians to be pure?
Purity in the Context of calls us to two things:
To abstain from evil conduct (verse 3)
and to abstain from evil conversation (verse 4)
Indulgence and impurity are rooted in selfishness and self-gratification! (the opposite of Love)
Why are we maintain purity?
It is improper for God's people
idolaters do not inherit the kingdom of God, we have learned this in the Old Testament (Its the same in the NT)
Paul is saying that there is nothing further from God's love than being in sexual relationships that are forbidden by God.
Our tendency as young people is to go to college and just implode.
Drinking
Partying
Promiscuity
We tend to tell kids to get it out of there system and then come back to Christ.
That mentality is bankrupt!
Indulging in the college life as a right of passage towards adulthood in the furthest place you can be from the Love of God.
I know many of you will not heed this warning, because it is the most tempting experience you will face. Remember !
Remember we are beloved children of God and he is our father.
Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
We also conduct our words in a manner that is worthy
All of our language is to glorify God.
I have a friend in the navy and he swears like a sailor.
I have other friend tell vile jokes.
These actions dishonor God.
James asks us, do you worship God with the same mouth that you curse people with?
This way of talking should disgust us!
Do not partner with people that conduct themselves evilly or talk evilly
Why?
They tempt me to swear and encourage me to act wickedly!
My navy friend swears, because he surrounds himself with people who swear!
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Walk in Light (v. 8-14)
The third way we imitate Christ is by walking in light.
We should live of life that is different that the people of our country, the people of our state, and the people of our towns
Because darkness here is before our regeneration
We were once unbelievers living in and like the world, but know you are in Christ
and have been transported for your darkened, hopeless state. To a state that has been enlightened by the Holy Spirit
The characteristic of light are goodness, righteousness, truth.
For those in light, Christ actively forgives every sin in which you commit… and the fruit of Truth… We stand privileged and adored by our savior as we revel in the truth of the gospel
This text says do not go into the darkness ever again, but expose the darkness!!!!
The light always exposes the darkness
Paul has sin in mind. The more we hide our sins and leave them in darkness, the more the grow and thrive.
When our sin is exposed, Christ either condemns us or restores us!
Think of King David and Bathsheba!
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,
Walk in Wisdom(v. 15-20)
The final way we imitate Christ is by walking in wisdom.
Time management
What is wise about using time well?
How shouldn't we use our time?
Don't wast time by being drunk,
Binge Netflix
I gotta say it Too many sports
Too much video games
What is the problem with poor time management?
How can we do the good if we are wasting our time!
Charlie Wingard is a good example!
How should you use your time?
Doing the will of the Lord
instead sing praises to God
Glorify his name in thanksgiving
Submitting to each other
Serving others and praising God!
This is the foundation for our Christian ethic
Proposition: Walk like Christ
Christ walks in love
Christ walks in purity
Christ walks in light
Christ walks in wisdom
Therefore, You walk like Christ!!!!!!!!!
And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple.
