Intro

Matthew 16:21–23 NRSV
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

Lose Yourself

Matthew 16:24 NRSV
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.
* To come after Jesus (follow or be like him) one must
* deny/reject himself
* There's going to be times of confusion.
* There's going to be times when you will not know whether to trust me or the common sense that you have!
* lift up his cross
* This would have been terrifying to here for these ordinary people!
* They were already leaving their businesses and the life they knew, then he tells them that he's going to die, and then he says YOU do the same thing!
In the Roman Empire a convicted criminal, when taken to be crucified, was forced to carry his own cross. This showed publicly that he was then under and submissive to the rule he had been opposing. Likewise Jesus’ disciples must demonstrate their submission to the One against whom they had rebelled. The path Jesus and His followers would travel would be a road of sorrow and suffering. But in so losing one’s life, one would truly find a better life. Jesus’ similar words (in 10:38–39) were stated in connection with one’s attitudes toward his family; here (16:24–25) Jesus spoke in relation to Peter’s misunderstanding about His program and the cost of discipleship.

* follow me (Jesus)

Winners & Losers

Matthew 16:25 NRSV
For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.
* "Whoever wants to save his soul will lose it (die)"
* What exactly is the soul in this context?
* will you save your soul or destroy it?
* Saving your life/soul means destroying it in a bad way.
* destroying your life/soul means finding it.
to reach ⇔ find for oneself v. — to succeed in obtaining, reaching, or arriving at; conceived of as coming upon something for oneself.
* * Because destroying your will is what LIFE is! Jesus shows us that by dying on the cross to attain his eternal self!
Matthew 16:26 NRSV
For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?
26
* What exactly is the soul in this context?
* The comparison of earning everything in there is to exist is nothing compared to losing your soul.
* If you already possess this then how is it that you can lose it?
* will you save your soul or destroy it?
* How can you destroy what you have and then gain it?
* Saving your life/soul means destroying it in a bad way.
* Maybe you can do like Jesus and allow the destruction of what you have to gain something better and eternal?
* destroying your life/soul means finding it.

Victory Through Loss

Matthew 16:27 NRSV
“For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.
Daniel 7:13 NKJV
“I was watching in the night visions, And behold, One like the Son of Man, Coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days, And they brought Him near before Him.
This “Son of Man” reference would have been very familiar to one who was a Jew. This is the one who would end all worldly kingdoms and put in place the rule of God and that of His people!
“…he will repay everyone for what has been done.”
Encourage sustained good activity in replace of old sustained activity so that you will be judged only on the good.
Matthew 16:28 NRSV
Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
This would come to fruition as the inner circle of Apostles will see Jesus in a very different light. Much like he will be on the day of Judgment. We will discuss that Lord willing next week.

Conclusion

Soul HAS to be the key in this passage! The ability to think, will, and feel is important. We must protect that against ourselves and adopt the mind of Christ (Savior).
