Opening Discussion Question
If you asked students in your school or town to define love, what kind of answers do you think you would get?
How would you answer that question—What is love?
Transition
While there are numerous potential answers to the question of love that students today might give, many of those answers likely revolve around romance.
In other words, we tend to think of love mostly as something we feel.
While love certainly involves feelings, that is not primarily the way the apostle Paul defines love in his influential teaching on the subject in .
Paul describes love primarily as an attitude of the heart that is empowered by the Spirit and displayed in our disposition to our fellow image-bearers.
So to think of love as a feeling misses the point and encourages us to see love as primarily circumstantial.
In contrast to this, Paul reminds us that love is a spiritual gift we are called to exercise for God’s glory and the good of the church.
The single greatest and most important gift given to all believers is love.
