A Quick Trip
A Quick Trip
Lou travelled for work to England last week and her company was very generous and said I could tag along too.
As Lou was planning for the trip she realised that we were going to visit England a few days before ANZAC DAY and that this year is the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It was also the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Villas
So Lou and I decided to attend the Anzac Day memorial service after Lou finished work in Norwich and London. We arrived at 1am on a very cold morning at the Australian memorial just outside the town Of Villas Bretenu on the very battle field those young soldiers fought across 100 years ago to the day.
We were mindful of the sacrifice and really wanted to show our thankfulness to the young men and women who lost their lives all those years ago in the First World War.
Slide 1: photo of battle of Villas
It is also the first 100 year anniversary of the end of one of the biggest allied victories of the war where the Australians stopped the final German advance and began the rout of the German army after years of stalemate on the western front the town of VILLAS BRETENU.
Slide 1: photo of battle of Villas
This battle was the beginning of the end of the First World War. The battle is so significant in our history that this is where the Australian government decided to build the AUSTRALIAN MEMORIAL to all Australians who lost their lives in the First World War at VILLAS BRETENU

The battle to take the town was desperate because if it was lost, nothing would stop the Germans marching to paris and we very well could have lost the war. The battle for villas bretenu began 3 years to the day to the first landings at Gallipoli. This fact was not lost on the soldiers who lined up behind the white tape in the dark before the attack. They fought desperately knowing the consequences of defeat. Many died …. but they won a major victory and more importantly gave back the town to its people.

Slide 3: the ceremony crowd maybe?
Lou and I were struck by the thankfulness of the people AT THE CEREMONY.
There were at least 9000 Australians there among others. It was the most aussies in the town of villas bretenu since the day the AIF attacked on 25 April 1918.
The prime minister was at the ceremony. Our ex prime minister Tony Abbot

and Prince Charles representing the queen.
Slide 5: Lou and Charles
The thankfulness expressed that morning was very moving.
But what struck Me the most was not the speeches of the dignatories. It was the French young people from the village of villas bretenu who had come to say thank you
Slide 4: Young person speaking at Ceremony
They represented the French people from the Somme river valley. The people there are still mindful of the sacrifice of the Aussies who gave their lives to win them the peace the enjoy today and they are thankful. As a result we experienced nothing but generosity from the French people’s met for the whole of our time there. As soon as they realised we were Aussies and that we had taavelled to join them in remembering they could not do enough for us.
Slide 5: photos of flag in village
As we drove through the region the day before we had been struck by the outpouring of thankfulness from the people of France to Australia. We saw flags and statutes and memorials. But prehaps the most moving was the school in villas bretenei itself. The school has the saying never forget Australia in bold letters painted in their main quad.
Slide 6: Never forget Australia at school in village
After the war the people of Victoria were so moved by the poverty of the towns people of villas bretenu who were struggling to rebuild their lives after the war children from Victoria held a fund raising drive to rebuild the school. The aussies did not just rescue the village they also wanted to build a better life for the people. So the people of villas breteneu are doubly thankful. They are now living prosperous peaceful and happy lives in part due to a country from the other side of the World.
This thankfulness is deep and abiding and shows itself as more than just mere words . In …. the Victorian town of … was burnt down in the black ….. bushfires. When the school children of villas bretenu heard about the fire and they held a fund raiser to build a new school for the Victorian town. Now the town has a written plaque at its school never forget France. This thankfulness has only made the bonds of friendship between our two countries stronger.
thankfulness longs to be generous. Not out of a sense of duty or just because there is a debt but a desire to be generous because of love and relationship.
Thankfulness with generosity is one of the core values of Sr that gives us our culture. We may not always achieve it but each week we seek to build warm and lasting relationships. We are mindful that Christ gave his life for us and we are so thankful for the benefits we have that we want to try to be generous to others.
The Bible teaches me that Thankfulness makes my life better and my thankfulness makes your life better. In fact thankfulness is a central value of the Bible and is a personal response of someone who has been captivated by he titanic generous of God to me and you.
It is well summed up in the words of Jesus when he says he who has been forgiven much lives much.
More and more people are understanding the importance of thankfulness. But if we leave god out of thankfulness we miss the true power it holds. Thankfulness motivates ordinary people to contribute to the greatest cause the world has ever seen or will ever see, a cause that is not, that of partnering with God as he builds the Kingdom of God person by person, generation to generation, culture to culture and place to place all over the earth. How can I cultivate thankfulness in my spiritual life?
There are many passages in The Bible that explore different aspects of thankfulness but tonight we are going to dive into just one. It is the verse we have chosen on our values page that you can find on our website on the beliefs section. The
Just like Lou and I were mindful of the sacrifice of the diggers and responded in thankfulness so Paul in our passage tonight reminds the Thessalonians and reminds all Christians what Christ has done for them so that they may be mindful of who they are as Christians and be thankful.
Can you see evidence of this kind of thankfulness in your life?
As Lou was planning for the trip she realised that we were going to visit England a few days before ANZAC Day and that this year is the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. It is also the first 100 year anniversary of the Australian victory at the Battle of Villas Bretenoux.

Slide 2: The Battle to take the town
This battle was also very symbolic as it occurred 3 years to the day after the first Gallipoli landings on the 25th of April 1915. This day was already being remembered as ANZAC Day. The fact that the Battle of Villas Bretenneoux took place on the 3rd Anzac day was close to the minds of the soldiers at Villas Bretenoux. Many of them were vertrons of the Gallipoli landings themselves.

Thankfulness
Thankfulness with generosity is one of the core values of Soul Revival. As a community we value being mindful of the fact that Christ gave his life for us and we value being thankful for the benefits we have in Christ and as a result we value being generous to others.

thankfulness longs to be generous. Not out of a sense of duty or just because there is a debt but a desire to be generous because of love and relationship.
Just like those of us at the Anzac Day services this week were mindful of the sacrifice of the diggers and responded in thankfulness, so Paul in our passage tonight reminds us tonight to be :
Paul in our passage tonight reminds us tonight to be
Mindful of who we are in Christ, thankful for Gods blessings to us and generous to others
Mindful of who we are in Christ, thankful for Gods blessings to us and generous to others
mindful of who we are in Christ and be thankful for the grace given us and he encourages us to be generous to others.
So with this in mind lets turn to and look first of all at Paul’s teaching on generosity. We will only touch on being generous briefly tonight because Matt will unpack this in more detail for us next week.
lets look first at his encouragement for us to be generous to our leaders. Lets read vv12-13
Practice Generosity
Practice Generosity
Tonights passage begins with Paul calling on us to be generous people. Here he says Christians should first be generous toward our leaders and second Christians should be generous toward other people.
lets look first at his encouragement for us to be generous to our leaders.
Be Generous Your Leaders vv. 12-13

Please read with me vv 12-13
Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
1 Thes
It is easy to be suspicious of our leaders, it is easy to resent and get frustrated by them. Australians are generally known around the world for having a lack of respect for leadership.
In verse 12 Paul encourages us to acknowledge those who work hard among us because they are caring for us in the name of the Lord.
the flip side of this is
So the next day as they walked down for their morning constitutional they walked passed the same officer wearing shoes. But they were not wearing anything else.
We laugh at that kind of disrespect but Paul points out that we should be generous to our leaders.
In verse 12 he says we should acknowledge those who work hard among us because they are caring for us in the name of the Lord.
If a leader is not caring out the work of the Lord they do not deserve our respect. If a leader abuses their position Paul teaches us to call them to account. For example Paul calls some of the self appointed leaders of the Galation church who lead the people astray and abuse them wolves.
In contrast the leaders of the Thessalonians are due respect.
However if a leader abuses the position Paul teaches us to call them to account. While the leaders of the Thessalonians are due respect. He calls some of the self appointed leaders of the Galation church who lead the people astray and abuse them wolves.
In verse 13 he goes on to say that the Thessalonian Christians are encouraged to hold their leaders in high regard in love. The ESV actually translates this as respect them.
It is definitely an attitude that our media today perpetuates. It is rare to hear the medai praise our leaders. They are much more likely to find fault in almost every news story.
Our leadership at Soul Revival is a team that works hard in caring out the work of the Lord and I am hearted that the team is shown so much generosity, love and respect.
Being generous to our leaders will help them to better serve the Lord and us. It will help the kingdom work to grow faster if we respect and love our leaders.
Just like the people of Villas Brenennoux love and respect the Australians who liberated them so we should love and respect our leaders who are seeking to help liberate us from sin and help us to grow to become more joyful and mature. That is the work of our leaders.
Being generous to them will help them to better serve the Lord and us. It will help the kingdom work to grow faster if we respect and love our leader.
Like other Anglican churches we regularily refer to the PSU each year. This is another work that your leaders do in the Lord to keep the Church safe.

Constantly getting upset and frustrated at your leaders who will never be perfect can effects us and can make us miserable. If you want to be more peaceful and happy, look to be generous to your leaders. Look for the good in them first instead of just concentrating on the negatives.
We can still hold our leaders to account while also loving and respecting them. If a leader falls into sin and neglects the duty of leadership it is actually the duty of a loving respectful member of the church to admonish them or if they have wronged you our church has reporting pathways to get help, like the Professional Standards unit that you can use to report abuseive leaders.
this is te same when it comes to each other. Getting frustrated at your leaders or at others hurst you a lot more than it does them.

This is both religious and state appointed.
But at the same time in verse 12 Paul says we should be generous to your Godly leaders even when they need to admonish us and call us to stop sinning.

Lets look at vv 14-15
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
: 14-15
How do we put this generosity towards our leaders and other people into practice?
Just as we can get frustrated with leaders we can get frustrated with each other at church.
Like Paul encourages us to be generous to our leaders so he also encourages us to be generous to each other in verse 13. It is of course not always easy but Paul encourages us to “Live in peace with each other.”
Here Paul is really helpful. He shows us how to live at peace with each other.
He encourages us to show generosity to each other by talking about our problems and not just avoiding people who irritate us.
In verse 14 he says to “warn the idle and disruptive.” In other words being generious can mean talking through hard truths with one another.
The reason some bad cultures develop in churches is that people who see them don’t admonish the person.
At Soul Revival we value talking about problems before they get to big to fix. By talking to a person who needs warning you are actually being generous to them if you are hoping they will grow from your feedback.
At Soul Revival we like to talk about problems before they get to big to fix. By talking to a person who needs warning you are actually being generous to them if you are hoping they will grow from your feedback.
Good example: last year alerted to a problem
Now we need to be gentle with each other and as much as we can we try to build a relationship of encouragement with eachother and not condem each other.
Or be generous with your money by making sure you don’t just leave it up to a few people to help keep the Church budget on track.
In verse 14 Paul shows us what generosity looks like.
Have a look with me at verse 14
Generosity involves encouraging the disheartened, helping the weak, being patient with everyone, not being interested in payback but striving to good by everyone.
Someone I met on my trip to england how lives a generous life is Baz. Chaplain to boxers, rugby league and Sheffield Wednesday.
This generosity needs to spill out of our church so that we can learn more and more to be generous to people outside our church as well as inside oour church.

A number of families and individuals are involved in ministries outside of Soul Revival.
It is not always easy to have a heart of generosity. Paul shows us how to be generous in vv 16-18. Especially when we are tired and over streched already.

How do we put this generosity towards our leaders and other people into practice?
As i have already pointed out it is not always easy to have a heart of generosity. Paul shows us how to be generous in vv 16-18. We first must practice Thankfulness if we are to have genuine generosity toward our leaders and other people.
Paul shows us in this passage how we can grow in our generosity. The way to grow generosity in your life is to first practice Thankfulness.

Rejoice Always
When you are mindful of who you are you and what you have in Christ you will grow in your thankfulness and rejoice. Becoming thankful helps you to rise above challanges and difficulties and have strenght to deal with lifes trials. This helps you be in the moment not worrying about tomoorrw or regretting yesterday.
No matter how bad life gets for Paul is is always thankful for God’s saving power. Have a look at verse 23-24

This practicing of thanfulness is known as Christian piety. Now piety gets a bad reputation these days. Piece people are seen as party poopers fun police, dower, boring not having any joy. This repretation is because pious people avoid sin. And in our society today sin is seen as fun. Christians try not to indulge in sin so they have no fun worse they make other people stop having fun too.
But as you can see here this piety has a positive side too. If the negative is avoid sin then the positive is to live a great thankful life. How does this make your life better. Well paul says it does in three ways. It makes you generous.

During the Black Saturday Bush fires in 2009 a small Country town’s school burnt down. When the school children of villas bretenu heard about the fire in Victoria and they held a fund raiser to build a new school for the Victorian town of Strathewen.
